Post Operative Tightness

by Deborah34, Aug 11, 2008 09:00AM
I had a total thyroidectomy (papillary cancer was discovered in two nodules) last Wednesday and am experiencing extreme tightness in my throat.  In fact, it seemed to become worse yesterday, Sunday.  Is this normal?  I'm thinking that as the wound heals internally things are starting to tighten up, much the way an external cut might start to tighten as it begins to heal.  Any opinions?  How long should this sensation last?  It's very nerve wracking.

Thanks for any advice anyone might have.

Yes, the tightness is normal. As a matter of fact, I had a partial thyroidectomy on May 1,2008 and still have the feeling. It has improved since the swelling has gone down. That took about 9 weeks. But the feeling is horrible. Right now, I feel as though I have swallowed something and it's stuck in my throat. ( feel this ALL the time).

Move your head and neck around in small circles and side to side , that will help a bit.  Also, after you go to get the stitches/tape removed, you can start to gently massage the area. I bought some scar diminishing cream and it helps.  I think massaging it is supposed to help with the inside healing.

Also, I can no longer tilt my head back like I used to.  It feels like I am short a few inches of  neck skin.

Just keep track of the feeling and everything to advise your doctor so he/she can make note of it in your medical file.
Feel better and take good care of yourself.

Hi Linda,

Thanks for this information and for your advice about the massaging, etc.  I go for my post op appointment today (will probably have the tape removed) and will discuss this with my surgeon, although she is not very forthcoming with information so I'm glad to be able to speak with all of you.  I'll also buy some scar diminishing creme today.

How long was it before you were comfortable eating something more solid than cottage cheese?  Right now swallowing is pretty difficult.

Yes, its a horrible feeling.  A few moments ago I leaned my head over to pick something up and all the blood rushed into my neck which made me feel even worse.  I can't wait for the next couple of months to pass.

Thanks again.

I pretty much ate soft foods for a week or two.  I had jello, pudding, Campbells Soup at Hand, and broth. I also drank Ensure, but I think that was a mistake because those have too many calories ( I think around 500 or so per can).
OMG--- As I was typing this, I started having a cough attack, (have been getting very dry throat causing me to cough). Well, wouldn't you know, I had to run to the bathroom to throw up. UGH!! My throat is killing me now.
Before my surgery I felt pretty good overall. After, I don't have one day were there isn't something wrong. Well, at least this is Day 4 in a row for me that I haven't had depression hovering over me.

Feel better and take really good care of yourself.
