I think it would depend on your situation.i.e. size of tumor, what stage, your age, male or female. However every opinon i received or read about follicular cancer the recommended is total thyroidectomy followed by Rai and hormone replacement. Its a little different with papillary especially if the tumor is less than 1cm..there is alot of debate about that...If i were you i would have the surgery and get the rest out..just my opinion!!
Best of luck to you

for Stage one Follicular cancer
Hey-
I would have it out as well. I had mine removed followed by RAI six years ago for follicular cancer. Mine was 2.2cm. Follicular is notorious for being more aggressive than papillary. I was only 20 when diagnosed, but there was no question about removing the whole thing. The risks increase as you age. You can also trace any recurrances easier without the other side. Thyroglobulin cannot be measured it you still have a partial thryoid. It is the easiest and best ways to measure recurrance. Better to deal with surgery now than complications later.
