Pregnancy Labs -confused!!!

So I'm currently 7 weeks pregnant and the labs I had completed a few weeks before conception were the following:

August 2011
TSH 0.01          range 0.4-4.0
T4 free 1.45       range 0.5-1.50
T3 free 5.5         range 2.3-4.2
T3 total 223       range   60-282
Thyroglobulin Antibody 844      range <21
Thyroperoxidase Ab 1300        range 0.01     range  0.4 -4.0
FT4  0.99       range   0.5 -1.50
FT3   3.7       range  2.3-4.2
TT3    138      range  60-181

OK, so what do you all think?  Should I be on meds?  my TSH has gotten even lower -can it get any lower than  this?  But everything else is in normal range, what does this mean?  I'm so confused?

Also, as a side questions -how much selenium is advisable to take during pregnancy to lower antibodies?
thank you!!!!!

The fact that your levels are going all over the map, tend to make me really think your underlying problem is Hashimoto's and you are doing the "swing" that we see so often.  I did it myself for years (only realized what had happened "after the fact"), before my thyroid finally gave up and  I went permanently hypo... My thyroid levels were never tested when I was younger, so this is the conclusion I've come to, since I've researched, been on the forum and learned what I know now....I even had to fight to get  my levels tested when I got old and symptoms pointed to hypo; you're ahead of me on that.

Do follow up on that TSI test (I think it takes a couple weeks or more to get results).  Please make sure you let me know the results.

Yes, you are correct on the labs, and yes they have decreased considerably!  IF you were to look back at older posts of mine, you would see that I tend to fly all over the map with labs.  I agree with testing every 4-6 weeks, leaning more towards the 4, just to be sure.

I DID had a TSI test done, but ya know, I completely forgot about it and never heard the results.  I will  call and find out!  thanks!

The part of my first comment that didn't post right is that I wanted to verify that the following results were from October:

FT4 = 0.99
FT3 = 3.7
TT3 = 138

If this is correct, then your levels decreased considerably from the August readings.  It would be hoped that with more normalized levels, your symptoms will begin to go away as well.

In my opinion, since your levels seem to varying a lot, you should get tested about every 4-6 weeks.

Do you know if you had a TSI test to confirm that Graves diagnosis?

yes, you are correct about the October TSH -it is LESS than 0.01, that was a typo.

Thank you for your input, it actually makes me feel a lot better knowing that you think it's ok that I go unmedicated.  I've been my biggest advocate through this whole thing, so the endo would like to check levels every trimester, but I might suggest more often than that.

I'll keep you posted, thanks!

My message didn't post properly either; a lot of if got left off when I posted it.

I'm questioning the October TSH because the way you have it typed is "greater than" 0.01.  Usually, if the result is greater than 0.01, there would be an actual number, not the greater than sign.

On the other hand my TSH runs "less than" 0.01, therefore it's always reported as < 0.01.

Hopefully, your levels will stabilize and some of your symptoms will go away, now that your FT3 and FT4 have come down.  You do need to worry about the baby.  If you are hyper, the baby should be monitored; however, since your levels have come down, your doctor is not considering you to be hyper any longer.

FT3 and FT4 are the most important hormones, so are most concern.  As I said before, TSH is not a good indicator of thyroid status.

I have read that the antibodies CAN cross the placenta. Here's one article I found:
http://endocrine.niddk.nih.gov/pubs/pregnancy/

I don't see that PTU would be warranted at this point, but, yes, you should be able to take a beta blocker; ask your doctor about it.

I would not recommend supplementing with anything right now, unless you have your doctor's blessing.

Is your doctor planning to  monitor your results closely throughout your pregnancy?

OMG!!!!! This is so messed up! I'm so frustrated!!!! It looked perfect when I typed it!!  AAAAHHHHHH!  OK, the second set of FT3. FT4 and FT3 are from October 2011 -at 6 weeks pregnant!  My TSH for October is >0.01

Any suggestions on what to do about this layout issue?! LOL

Yes, every time I post the layout gets ALL mixed up -let me try this one more time!  The Following labs were taken in August BEFORE CONCEPTION

TSH 0.01          range 0.4-4.0
T4 free 1.45       range 0.5-1.50
T3 free 5.5         range 2.3-4.2
T3 total 223       range   60-282
Thyroglobulin Antibody 844    range <21
Thyroperoxidase Ab 1300        range 0.01      range  0.4-4.0
FT4  0.99       range   0.5 -1.50
FT3   3.7       range  2.3-4.2
TT3    138      range  60-181

This is all after yrs of dealing with this problem, I ahve symptoms of both hyper and hypo as I mentioned before, and only just got a diagnoses in August after having an US of the thyroid, and she said there was scar tissue, etc etc.
I spoke with my Endo last night on the phone, who said that both T4 and T3 have come into normal range -which now makes me "subclinical" so we shouldn't worry that TSH is still so low.  She says that "we're moving in the right direction.  I then ask her what's better for the baby, and she said to be unmedicated, at least I'm hyper and not hypo and we don't have to worry about the baby not getting enough.

So, here are my questions:

1. Is this true that there's no worry about the baby's health? Can't a baby become hyperthyroid by getting too much?

2. If T3 and T4 remain in normal range, is that all I need to worry about?

3.  Do I need to worry about these antibodies crossing the placenta, and how much selenium is safe to take during pregnancy?

4. if it is best to not take thyroid meds (PTU in my case) can I take a beta blocker for symptoms while PG?

THANK YOU everyone, I'm really kind of freaking out about this! your advice is much appreciated!

I'm confused, but that's nothing new........ lol    MedHelp has been doing a lot of updates and "improvements" lately, so things aren't always posting as intended.  Let's try to clarify.

Do I understand correctly that this set of tests was done in August?

August 2011
TSH 0.01          range 0.4-4.0
T4 free 1.45       range 0.5-1.50
T3 free 5.5         range 2.3-4.2
T3 total 223       range   60-282
Thyroglobulin Antibody 844      range  0.01 and is that a typo that should have been "< 0.01"?

Please clarify

You would need a Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin (TSI) in order to be diagnosed with Graves; did you have that?  If so, what was the result?

From what you've posted, your antibody results indicate that you have Hashimoto's, though you could have both Hashi's and Graves, if you had a positive TSI.

It's not uncommon for people with Hashimoto's to swing from hyper to hypo in short periods of time; looking at your Free T3 and Free T4 results, it would appear that this is what might be happening to you.

Some symptoms can "cross over" (apply to both hyper and hypo).

Keep in mind that TSH is a pituitary hormone and not always indicative of actual thyroid function; however, with yours staying so low even when your FT3 and FT4 drop, I'd wonder if you've had any tests to confirm pituitary function.

Yeah, I'm not sure why it kept posting my numbers like that.  The first round of labs were done in august, and the second round at 6

weeks pregnant -which was last week!  It just messed up the formatting.  TSH was 0.01 before pregnancy, and at 6 weeks plummeted to >0.01 with range of 0.4-4.0

I was diagnosed with Graves, although I have BOTH symptoms. extreme hunger -but gain weight easily.  heart palpitations, insomnia and exhaustion, ringing int he ears, hand tremors, inability to withstand heat and cold (can change by the hr sometimes)

I'm very concerned about my TSH level being so low while being pregnant, what are the repercussions to the baby for not being medicated?

Something is very confusing. Because you list both T4 Free and FT4 which are identical. yet the numbers are different. Same with T3 and Total T3.

Are these for different dates?

I believe your antibody tests would indicate that you have Hashimoto's disease.  This is an autoimmune condition where your body's immune system thinks your Thyroid is a foreign invader and over time proceeds to kill the Thyroid gland from producing Thyroid.  However during this process especially at the beginning, it can make some people swing between Hypo and Hyper.  Eventually you will be Hypo full time.

Your numbers are fairly high in the ranges for FT4 and FT3 and your TSH is low. Which generally many may think that you are Hyper.

HOWEVER the real test is whether you have any hyper symptoms.  common Hyper symptoms are intolerance to heat, sweating and racing heart rate.  Always hungry and not able to gain weight.  Others are anxiety and panic attacks  and ringing in the ears but these also are shared with Hypo as well.

If you are not having any symptoms, I would not recommend any medication until you do.

OK, not sure what happened there with the formatting...

August 2011
TSH 0.01          range 0.4-4.0
T4 free 1.45       range 0.5-1.50
T3 free 5.5         range 2.3-4.2
T3 total 223       range   60-282
Thyroglobulin Antibody 844      range 0.01    range  0.4 -4.0
FT4  0.99       range   0.5 -1.50
FT3   3.7       range  2.3-4.2
TT3    138      range  60-181

I'm currently unmedicated and wondering if I should be!  thanks!
