Pregnant with Hypothyroid

by JO892, Mar 20, 2008 03:44PM
I am now 16 weeks pregnant and just found out i have a hypothyroid condition. Before being pregnant I had no problems and was a daily runner. I have always worked out.. Do I have this thyroid condition because I am pregnant and will it go away once the baby is born. My doctor placed in my synthroid.. Is this safe for my baby.

As far as I know synthroid is safe for you to take while you are pregnant.I was also diagnosed with a pregnancy induced hypothyroid condition after my daughter was born last year and I'm pretty sure once you have it it's for good (unfortunately) make sure you have your labs done regularly because an uncontrolled hypothyroid while you are pregnant can be dangerous to your baby..also, exercise is the best thing to stimulate your thyroid..

I highly recommend you read Mary Shomon's book, "Living Well with Hypothyroidism".  There is a whole chapter on pregnancy and hypothyroidism which I learned a great deal from.  As Gabby suggested, you should be getting checked at least every trimester and have your medication adjusted as necessary.  Unfortunately, once you're diagnosed, you have it for life.  Good luck with your pregnancy!
