Question about thyroid levels

by TXchic, Jun 20, 2008 08:04PM
Here is just a brief rundown of my thyroid levels and test over the past year.
TSH 4.5, FT4 1.2, FT3 282 no thryoid meds just diagnosed
TSH 2.79, FT4 1.2, FT3 279 25 mcgs Synthroid
TSH 2.19, FT4 1.3, FT3 278 50 mcgs Synthroid
TSH 1.89, FT4 1.4, FT3 275 75 mcgs Synthroid
TSH .89, FT4 1.6, FT3 269 75 mcgs Synthroid, 5 mcgs of Cytomel per day
Currently, taking 75 mcgs Synthroid and 25 mcgs of Cytomel and will retest in 6 weeks

I must say that I feel better with the increased doses.  However, on Synthroid alone I had so much fluid retention.  Once the cytomel was added the fluid retention has subsided a bunch.  I have actually been able to lose 9 pounds which is a huge accomplishment since I haven't drop a pound in a year.  I was actually gaining!  I follow a strict diet, and workout out religiously.

My question Doc is will my Synthroid dosage need to be reduced going forward.  I noticed from my lab results that the FT3 levels are dropping when adding the Cytomel.  Also, that the FT4 level continues to increase.  My doctor said we will let the 25 mcgs of Cytomel take action over the next 6 weeks and then possibly decrease the Synthroid based on the new levels.  I am just wondering if this is all correct?

I am no doctor but your doctor's plan sounds like you are getting good treatment.

If you want to ask Dr. Lupo about it, you can find him at the "Ask an Expert" thyroid forum. This forum is patient to patient. you can find his forum here;

http://www.medhelp.org/forums/show/120

You can also find him by looking down the column on the right until you see "Related Expert Forums" and click on thyroid.

His forum only accepts a few new questions a day to keep him from being snowed under, so it may take a few tries to get a question posted to him.

Thanks for the response!  Currently, it states that the limit has been met for questions.  It was saying that as well yesterday.  So, I figured maybe someone in the community forum might have some info.

We're happy to help, and getting a question posted on the other forum is a challenge. He is off to a conference right now, and the limit on submissions may be even lower than normal.

You have my opinion, which isn't worth much, and I'm sure others will respond as well. I wasn't sure how familiar you are with how the expert forum works, but it sounds like you have done this before. LOL!!

Best of luck to you.
