RAI - Long Term Effects

by kobers, Oct 01, 2007 01:41PM
I was diagnosed with Graves Disease about 4 years ago and am scheduled to have RAI on Oct 12th.  Just wondering what sort of long term effects this may have on my body in the future.  I have a family history of breast and ovarian cancer and I'm worried that it will increase my all ready high risk of these cancers.  Any thoughts??
Thanks!!

Like I posted to someone else.  I had RAI 12 years ago and I had regular check ups and mammorgrams and all fine.  I was normal for 12 years and it just came back again.  I had to do the nuclear scan again and I have an apt on Oct 24th.  I have to see what they offer the 2nd time around for treatment.  Why did you wait 4 years to do the RAI?  Where you doing the pills?  I tied the pills and I am not very consistent about taking them, so it didn't work for me.

I have been taking tapazole on and off for the last 4 years.  I tend to take if for a few months and go into remission and take none for about 6 months and then it comes back and on and on.  I am so nervous about the RAI even though I am scared to death of having surgery!!  Would surgery be safer??

rai has been done for over 60 years and test have been done that shows there is on long term effects from rai.

the dose of rai for graves' is no more than a full day out in the sun or one dental x-ray.
depending on the doctors goal and how sever your graves, doctor my given  you  just enough rai to, or try to, stop the hyper symptoms, leaving your thyroid some function.  my throid still has some function. google  graves disease and rai to find a lot of info and great people

good luck
