RAI for Hyperthyroid vs Cancer

by SPencak, Feb 13, 2008 09:30AM
Hi everyone - I am hyperthyroid & recently read on another post that the experience of having RAI for cancer is much different than having RAI as a treatment for hyperthyroidism. I do not have cancer, just hyperthyroid. Honestly, I was leaning towards the surgery, but now after reading that post I feel like I can seriously consider RAI again as an option. Has anyone had RAI to treat only hyperthyroidism? If so, what was your experience like?

Hi - I had RAI for Hyperthyroid, and so far so good, no pain, it has been almost three weeks and I m feeling much better, without all those terrible simptoms, that you should know very well, I've been sleeping the whole night finally!! I am still having a bit of palpitation, but I heard that's normal for a while, I hope! I hadn't have the blood work done yet , so I don't know about medicatiion or anything. Hopefully I was a little helpfull. For me it was a good option I hope it will be for you as well.

Hi,
I  had RAI for hyperthyroid/hot nodule.  The treatment wasn't so bad.  I had very little pain, but didnt care for the isolation.  It has been two months since the treatment of RAI.  Now I am going through hyper he//.  The heart palpitations, sweating, brain fog, I'm still not still well.   So far my TSH has not climb.  The last blood work taken, my tsh was 0.08 and we need to get it higher.

I had 18 mci's and I'm not sure how they decide how much to give.  My understanding is that its all a guestimate.  I cant tell you how the actual surgery goes, since I didnt get it.  Most think its best to go ahead with the surgery and get it over with.

Whatever you decide, make sure you explain it all to your family.  You WILL go through some things that may not seem right to you or them.... you may not, however most of here has gone through something.

The verdict is still out as to whether it was the best option for me.  I go back to the endo dr on  3/5 and hopefully my tsh has risen.

best of luck
take care and be blessed
