RAIU

I am scheudled to have a radioactive thryoid uptake test. I question why I was having it. I have two small nodlues but they have not increased in 6 months, I Have been on thryoid low dose but taken off as it was mkaing me very nervous and blood pressure rise.  My tsh levels are not that bad only 2.97 but the Free T3 is on the low end.
From what I have read the RAIU test is only for hyper thryoidism, is this true?
If so I don't understand why he would order this as I have been told I have hypothryoidism
I am suppose to have it in 2 days any advice woudl be great.
Thanks

Radioactive thyroid uptake (RAIU) is most commonly performed to determine the cause of hyperthyroidism. Results can show high, low or uneven iodine uptake depending on the cause of the hyperthyroidism.  RAIU can also show low iodine uptake with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (uptake is usually low with patchy hot spots in the gland with Hashimoto's).  Nodules can show up as hot or cold. Hot nodules may overproduce thyroid hormone but they are rarely cancerous. Cold nodules do not uptake iodine and show cold spots. An estimated 10 to 20% of cold nodules are cancerous.

Its for both it is quite a detailed scan of your thyroid.
If you hypo it usually shows increased iodine uptake and lowered uptake for hyper.
its a detailed image of your gland.
Its a good tool to help diagnose thyroid problems.
I'm no expert but Ive had one and Its probably necessary.
