ROFLOL!!!!! That's the funniest thing I've ever heard!!!
I had a PT on 16 Jan and the drain came out the next morning. I had the other side removed on 18 Jan (cancer was found) and the drain was removed on Fri 19 Jan. I think I just had a tiny steri strip type thing over the drain hole. I felt really well and arranged to have lunch with friends that same day. As I was walking out of the ward on my way home I coughed to clear my throat and out spurted gunk out of my drain hole. Ooops, nurses put a larger dressing over it (but still very small). Every time I tried to clear my throat or coughed (obviously throat was aggravated from 2 surgeries) gunk spurted onto the dressing. Off to the pharmacy to buy a larger dressing. Success!!
I was so relieved - I thought it would have been very offputting for my friends at lunch, sitting opposite me at the table watching gunk spurt out of my neck every time I coughed. (I had a picture in my warped head of it spurting across the table - like a spurting artery). Hope no one's eating whilst reading this.

Hi Jean,
I think you are right - there may be many reasons for these aches and pains, especially given that you also had them before surgery. Good idea to talk to GP.
Stress is known to have far reaching effects on our bodies - yet the fundamentals of this are still poorly understood and are being continually researched. It is a very interesting area. You know the hormone our body produces when we are stressed is called Cortisol - the synthetic equivalent are steroid hormones such as prednisolone, cortisone etc. All these hormones and drugs act on the immune system by supressing it and making it less capable of fighting infection and completing normal processes. When someone is taking prednisolone or cortisone type drugs for a prolonged period of time we consider them immunosuppressed and vulnerable to infection.
Yeah you guessed it - about the medical field part. I'm a Division 2 Nurse (That's what we're called in Australia - the U.S. equivalent to LPN I think?) but I've got less than six months study to go and then
Hi,
Thank you.. Jenipeni are you in the medical field. Your very knowledgeable about this stuff. Just curious. I think it is great.
I have had those muscle aches both before and after surgery. I am sure there are many reasons for them. My next appt. with my GP I am going to ask. Yesterday was an awful day at work. I was under a ton of pressure and on top of that many interuptions. I wonder is stress could make me feel that way. Well It's 3 am and if I don't get my buns in the shower I will be late for work.. Have a great day All.. See ya.
Jean
Could be from thyroid levels "doing their thing" ...... mine (cramps, etc.) got worse and then got better when the levels got back in shape for me. I think the ankle thing I have going on is a "result" of the muscle problems and it went into something else as I have very bad flat feet and it may have been the premise for weakness in the first place.

PS: I had a drain and was so so out of it the first 24hrs (no pain meds .. just a migraine headache and severe vertigo) I didn't even know it was there! They took it out the next day and said it didn't drain much at all.
I'm not sure if this is what you want to know - if not just ignore it.
You have a drain because the surgery can cause considerable bleeding/haemorrhage. The blood needs to be drained away because there's not much space in the neck for it to pool - so any extra fluid would cause considerable swelling and pressure on nerves = increased pain and other possible complications that could get nasty.
The surgeon decides just before he/she closes you up whether you need one or two drains (as Justin had) depending on the amount of bleeding.
Jean - you are about 15 or 16 days post surgery I think? Sometimes a dramatic reduction in activity can make this worse - although it is normal after surgery BUT I would have though it would be disappeareing by now, but we are all different!
NOOOO you are not wimpy - if you say it hurts then it does, I believe you.
Cheers,
~Jen
hi
I had two drains with attached bottles when I had my TT last Wednesday. I was just walked around the hospital carrying these things. What a nuisance but I managed..
I didn't have a drain either... could that be why I have a "speed bump" just above the incision?
That's funny- good description. I have a speed bump where my incision is- it's hard though, still a little swollen.
Yes, I have a speed bump as well. Dr. told me I would but he had a different name for it.. That is too funny...
I was just wondering about the drain thing- I didn't have one at all, I even prepared my 10 year old daughter about it just in case so she wouldn't be scared. My legs feel weak too, you're not being whimpy - I am 9 days post TT- I thought it was from all of the sitting around I've been doing. I just drove for the first time today- yeah, I have my independence back. Of course going to breakfast and Wal-Mart has left me TIRED.......
