Yeah if I have to bet money I would bet the nodule will only get bigger too :( My endo and surgeon told me they can't just take out the nodule though - they said it would increase the chanse of bleeding and the nodule is bigger than the thyroid. So most likely I would have to say bye-bye to 45% of my dear thyroid. I think I read somewhere here on the board that there's 25% chance that the other side couldn't compensate.
I'm going back to my endo tomorrow and ask for more of the statistics. Good luck with your surgery - do you have a date scheduled?
Thanks JY for writing. Don't you feel that nodule in your neck? I know I certainly do and I am very anxious to get it out of there. I would if I were you. Yours sounds like it obviously has fluid (and large too) so I am not sure how those grow but my endo says that my solid one will just keep getting bigger. She said the surgery is quite easy and if they only take out the nodule the likelihood of meds is extremely low. :) Go for it! I think.... ahahaha
Hey Littles,

Hi Littles, congrats on the great news!
You and I should really be buddies! We are going through the exact same thing. I too have a fairly large nodule on my right thyrold (~3.7cm before they drained it, now it's probably ~2.7cm). Both FNAs last year and this year showed benign. Now I have to choose one of the 3 options:
- wait and watch (Pro - no surgery is always good; Con - the outlook of repeating u/s and fna every year is not so attractive, plus a benign result is not 100% accurate)
- remove the lobe that contains the nodule (Pro - no nodule to worry about; Con- surgery carries a risk, my surgeon said complication rate is about 1% which includes vocal chords, parathyroid, etc); you may or may not need thyroid meds after surgery; you may or may not develop another nodule on the other side of thyroid many years down the road)
-TT ( Pro - not to worry about nodules or ThyCa, ever; Con - am I taking out a completely fine half of thyroid? life time thyroid med.
So I'm still considering my option. I think I might go with option#2...
What would you guys do if you were me?
yey!!!! thats great! i love hearing good news!!!
Yipeeeeeeeee
Love Helen x x x
Ps i had TT in june for large 5cm nodule and several smaller ones and my vocal cords are just fine, just make sure you research your surgeon :-)
Had a TT and all went well. No hoarsenss. Scar healed very nicely and you have to look really really close to even see it.
Also had another gland removed (submandibular) and two lymp nodes, all went well, no hoarseness there either.
Great news on it being benign!!
There is a post worth searching recently on the community archives about complications .. it was in a poll .. that is a great post to see others who have had surgery with unexpected complications.
Here it is .. I found it for you:

Also feel free to do a community search on thyroid, vocal chords, and of the like maybe.
WELCOME
YEAH .. it is BENIGN!!!! We LOVE those words!
