Hallo everyone. I have a large thyroid nodule for many, many years. I don't remember not having it (now I'm 30 years old female). It is not causing any problems and it's not growing. But I read that larger than 1 cm nodules could be malignant. What do you think, could it be cancer?

Size is not the issue. Only a true fine needle biospy can detect an actual Dx of any carcimonas. Other CT scans can give some outcome of finding out if it is a "cold" or "hot " nodule and sometimes that can give the doctor an idea of the nodule too - but and FNA is the deciding factor.

The nodule is suspecting to be a malignant if :
• it grows rapidly;
• it is “cold” on the scan;
• it is solid with increased vascularity;
• it is hypoechoic on the ultrasound imaging.

In the iodine deficient areas the thyroid grows to the huge size with large nodules however the cancer rate there is not higher then anywhere else.
The benign nodules can be reduced in size by the ethanol injection into the nodule
