Selenium and Zinc

Hi,

Any input on taking selenium and zinc to help with thyroid problems - conversion from T4 to T3?  I have an acquaintance who tried it with great success - increased energy, etc.  I also read some articles on it.  Anyone tried it with success or not?

Thanks,
Liz

My doc has spoken highly of a supplement mix to support T4/T3 conversion, she mentioned things like selenium/zinc needed to support thyroid function. The brand she likes is Thyrocsin (thorne research). Thorne is reputable  based on my research. There are others just be sure to find a reputable seller, I found several who were sketchy. Also, for conversion, she mentioned milk thistle (from seed) to help liver overall which can help conversion.

Please post your T4 results with reference ranges.  Has your doctor tested FT3?

My Dr JUST prescribed this to me as I am having Synthroid Absorption issues as of late. I am on .175MCG of Synthroid/day but still showing higher than normal T4 levels and my TSH is staying elevated. So she prescribed selenium over-the-counter at 200mcg once a day and zinc over-the-counter at 15-30mg once a day; stating both of these can help with conversion. Was also looking for someone with similar issues/results? I had a Complete Thyroidectomy due to cancer in 2008 and had no problems until earlier this year.

I've been taking a multi-vitamin for over a year now, at the advice of my doctor. Two per day, actually.

He didn't specify any particular kind, but my digestion and absorbtion is so bad he figures two a day of anything wouldn't hurt, I guess.

I't a generic Men's vitamin, and it has most of this stuff we're talking about in it.

It has;

calcium    210mg        21%
magnesium  120mg   30%
zinc        15mg  100%
selenium   105mcg 150%
copper       2mg  100%
manganese    2mg  100%
chromium   120mcg 100%
potassium  100mg    3%
B12               300%
B6                150%

and a whole bunch of other stuff at 150% or 100%.
Not sure I like the idea of all those heavy metals. :-/
I'm not getting much potassium or calcium, I see.
Remember, I'm taking two of these a day, but then, who knows how much I'm absorbing or if the label is acurate.

I posted all that to make two points.

1) If you're taking vitamins, take that into account before you start taking supplements. You may already be taking them.

2) heavy metals build up in your body and the recommended daily requirements for some of these heavy metals is a lot lower than "theraputic doses", and there can be risks involved.

I take 30mg of zinc a day and do find the results beneficial - I also take magnesium and thst has been wonderful for me. I have not attemted selenium -- I may -- but I want to know more about it before I try - I think the 100 Zinc is a bit too much no more than 60 I think is better.

When you start testing out minerals - it can be dangerous - be careful - maybe start out small before you pump them in - you system may be lacking them - but you dont want to move quickly and injure yoiurself either.

I am hoping to hear from anyone who did, but my friend's sister took Zince 50 mg twice a day and selenium 100 mg twice a day.  It worked for her, but hoping someone on the thyroid board could confirm.  My doctor said it was OK - but just don't take it, as with other vitamins, at the same time as Synthroid - couldn't feel much worse.
