Selenium with Hashi's

I had read that it is good to take Selenium with Hashimoto's it helps get rid of the antibodies. Someone had mentioned they take the bio citrate selenium which is more fast acting then the regular one it is by solor ray. I found this one and read the ingredients and it has kelp in it which I thought contains iodine. I have read that iodine in not good for hypothyroidism. I wanted to know that how it has helped people that are taking it and how much they take. I read under the Dr forum he suggested to someone to take 200 mg once a day and make sure it is l-selonomethionine and not the salt form. I bought some at vitamin shoppe 200mg. I just wanted to see how people have done on it. Thank you for help.

Thanks, Deb - I have slowly been coming to conclusion that my being in the sunshine everyday might NOT be adequate for my vitamin D.

You are right that you need Vitamin D in order to absorb calcium; you also need magnesium, which is why so many of the calcium supplements you buy also say they have both Vitamin D and magnesium already in them.

I always think of toxicity aspect of things, so am usually pretty reluctant to take much of anything without KNOWING for sure that I need it.  I do know that the last time my calcium levels were tested they were at the very "high normal" end of the range, so I'm wondering if I do have an absorption problem.

I don't absorb vitamin B12, which is why I have to take shots; I have a conversion problem from T4 to T3 so have to take cytomel along with my levothyroxine, what's to say I don't have an absorption/conversion problem with the calcium/vitamin D?  I see my endo again at the end of June and I'm going to ask him if I can get both calcium and vitamin D tested to make sure I'm in the ball park.

I'm kind of like you - there are some things that work for me and if they happen to help someone else feel better, that's great.  If not, there are other things to try.

I am outside everyday too Barb and also working in the garden at weekends YET I still had a low Vit. D count.
I couldnt figure out why.
Anyway to cut a long story short, the Doc reckons the Vit. D also helps with absorbion of the Calcium and funny enough, I feel it helps with my levels too.
I asked if one can go 'toxic' by taking it with no breaks and the Doc said no so I stayed on it and have had it for over 10 months now.

There are a lot of vitamins out there on the market but I do know that some can cause 'toxicity' so always ask if I need a break from them after long term usage.
And you are right barb...we all suffer the same but we are all different in our own rights in what works for some, may not work for others and vice versa.

I'm just sticking to what works for me and if I can help by suggesting it to others, then hopefully it will work for them.
Sometimes it doesnt but anything is worth a try.
I totally agree with you.

Deb, I have you beat - I'll be 60 in just a couple weeks.  I used to have twice the muscle/joint pain than I do now, but I've taken calcium for years because I have osteopenia and it doesn't do anything for pain.  I don't take extra Vitamin D because I spend a minimum of 50% of my work day outside so always figured I probably had enough - maybe I'm figuring wrong?

I do take magnesium every day and that DOES help with the pain. I take my magnesium with my evening dose of calcium and it also helps me relax and I seem to sleep better. Isn't it odd how each of us uses different things to treat the same issues??

I guess whatever works to keep this rotten disease and its even more rotten symptoms at bay................

Good posting Barb.
I'm glad its 'helping' you with the antibodies.
As we both know...antibodies never go away...the little b*ggers just rise when they feel like it lol.
I found Calcium/D combined got rid of my aches and pains and swear by it,
Also nearing 50 doesnt help as the bones thin as we get older so I have stayed on them after the 'ok' from my Doc.

There was a thread on here a week or so ago, in which *I* stated that I  take selenium every day; I DO take Solaray bio citrate selenium in capsule form;  I DO get it from Vitamin Shoppe.  The selenium I have does NOT have kelp in it. I do take 200 mcg/day, keeping it separated by 4 hours from thyroid meds.

All that said, smilerdeb is correct; nothing will "get rid" of the antibodies.  Once you have them, they will always be there.   In my case, the antibodies were actually higher the second time I had them tested than they were the first time.  They will never *go away*.

It's NOT guaranteed to work everyone; however, in my case, it DOES seem to help keep the little buggers (antibodies) from *raging* out of control so much and I don't have the swelling, sore neck or the choking feeling nearly as bad.  I can certainly tell if I miss a few days of taking it, as I did this past week - I'm paying for it...

You can try it to see if it does help.  Good luck.....

Thank you. This forum has really helped me with a lot of questions I have had with this hashimotos . I am slowly getting better I am on Armour and have been for 8 months and am starting to feel like myself. I am still fatigued but my other symptoms are getting better. I have experienced some back pain and some other symptoms that sound like fibromalgia I am going to have my doctor look into it.

It did nothing for me but then again, I had a Selenium blood test done to see my levels and they were normal.
So anyone professing that Selenium gets rid of the antibodies are incorrect in my opinion.
Antibodies are there for life. They may go 'down' and lay 'dormant', hence the term 'remission' but they are from an autoimmune disease.
They dont just go away.
Everytime you are sick or stressed, the antibodies may rise and cause the tsh to fluctuate as well as the FT3 & FT4.
