Should I be on synthroid 50MCG?

I recently began loosing lots of hair.  I just had blood work for a physical and the doc said it may be my thyroid.  These were my levels TSH 3.09, FreeT3 2.83, FreeT4 .93.  The symptoms I am having seem worse than loosing hair.  I have gained 8 lbs in a month, very gassy and swollen, and have less energy.  I do feel less depressed but when I see the weight gained I get more depressed. It makes me wonder, should I just stop taking it?

Your FT4 was at 29% of range, which is a bit low of the 50% target for FT4.  However, your FT3 is at 56% of range, within the target range of 50+% for FT3.  TSH is within range according to your lab's range, but a more reasonable TSH range is 0.3-3.0, and you fall outside of that, indicating you could be slightly hypo.

So, these labs are from before you started meds.  Have you been retested since?  You should be retested 4-6 weeks after starting meds, and you are pushing 3 months.

How were you feeling before you started meds?  Have symptoms worsened, new ones appeared, some gotten better?

It's not unusual to feel slightly worse on starting meds.  With the introduction of hormones, your whole body has to rebalance.  Also, the initial dose we're given is a bit of an educated guess, and there are usually a few adjustments (at 4-6 week intervals with testing each time) before we find the dose right for up.

If I had to categorize, I'd say these results are "borderline hypo".  Whether or not you needed to start meds would depend on how you were feeling at the time of these labs.

I have been on it for 1 month.  The ranges are T3 (1.71-3.71) T4 (.70-1.48) TSH (.35-4.94). The lab report is from 6/20.

How long have you been on 50 mcg?

What are the reference ranges for your FT3 and FT4?  Ranges vary lab to lab and have to come from your own lab report.

Are these recent labs (date)?
