Should I take Bactrim and Cipro?? Help.

Went to emergency room last night to play it safe. Had a huge boil that had burst on Sunday and since I have an artificial hip, I thought I had better at least get it looked at. I have always gotten these when hypo and have always dealt with them myself and WITHOUT antibiotics. This one was a bit worse than normal. My hip is fine, no fever- no pain but just felt I should check it out- it looked like it needed a couple of stitches! TMI, sorry.

The doc there gave me scripts for Bactrim AND Cipro- for 2 weeks. They had me take some while there and when I got home I read about Bactrim (I already know the dangers of Cipro) Long story short, among the many problems and side effects associated with Bactrim, it says to let your doctor know if you have thyroid problems....also that it can cause permanent tinnitus. I was reading this AFTER I noticed that my ears were ringing louder after taking it. It also states to let your doc know if you are folic acid deficient, which I may well be.

I know there are a mutitude of dangers of all these things and that most don't happen, and I called the ER back and the doc had them tell me eh, don't worry about it. I know HE'S not worried about it, but I am! So just wondering if anyone here has had any experience with Bactrim. Any thoughts appreciated!!

LOL...I know about boils...However mine were abscesses in the ummm(anal) area.....NO FUN...

After it coming and going it finally turned into a full blow fistula...NO FUN..

Long story short...had all kinds of antibotics..nothing bothered me in relations to thyroid..Weather I was hyper or hypo at the time of with the antiboitics. The ordeal lasted a good 3yrs of this...

But no side effects...But everyone is different.

Thanks Barb. I have always dealt with them myself as well- thanks for your thoughts, I wanted to hear from my thyroid folks in addition to the pharmacist, doctor etc. My new doctor, who is too far away for an office call, just now called me back and told me not to take them. I was just a little concerned about my artificial hip, but I think it would have bothered it before it burst, and it's resolving now. I really went to emergency room to be sure it wasn't one of those weird sinus things. It's on the crease of my leg, at the panty line---such fun!

Again, just wanted to hear from the board on the off chance someone had problems with the Bactrim. Thanks again!

Where was the boil?  I've had doozies that leave huge craters...... have never gone to the doctor with them, though.

I've taken both Bactrim and Cipro since being hypo and haven't had any ill effects.  I've had tinnitus for years and expect that it is permanent, but doubt it's related to either the Bactrim or Cipro.

Because we're all different, you'll have to rely on your doctor. What's okay for me, might not be okay for you.  Do you have a primary care doctor or endo that you can talk to about this?
