So confused

by aggie988, Oct 12, 2008 09:54AM
I have seeing an Endo Dr. and I am not at all convinced that he knows what he is doing.  I started seeing him in April of this year I was feeling really lethargic and gained over 20 lbs.  He said that I had a nodule on my left side and did a biopsy and told me that my TSH had not even registered on my blood test.  I had been on 1 mcg and he dropped me down to .088 and the nodule was benign.  Then I went back in July and my TSH was 4.50 which I thought still warranted a change but he did not change my dosage. All he seems concerned with is that my cholesterol is high. Isn't your cholesterol high when your Thyroid is screwed up?  Now I went back last week and my TSH was 22.7 so he is having me taking my .088 5 x a week and two on Sat. and Sun.  He wants to put me on Flouristatin but I have also a blood disease and I am on a blood thinner and I don't think you can take this Cholesterol med when you are taking blood thinners.  I am beginning to think that he is more concerned with prescribing as many meds as he can and not taking care of my thyroid problem.  Shouldn't he be trying to speed up the death of my thyroid (Hashimoto's) so that my TSH is more consistent.  I am so confused.

Your TSH should be target to be between 1 and 2, then your cholesterol will go down. I agree with you first your TSH must be consistent.

I understand  ur frustration.......I too have Hashimotos.....I do not have my labs...for the TSH ect.....but I was not put on meds...the endo did an US in April, found nodules(too small for biopsy) and a 2nd US 2 wks ago....the one nodule was slightly larger, but he scheduled another US in yet another 6 months...in the meantime I am to go for an EKG to make sure I can take meds for the cholesterol......so I do feel ur pain.

I have to question your Endo's judgement.

88mcg 5 times a week and double that 2 times a week is 795mcg of medication per week.

The same medication is probably available in a doseage of 112mcg. If you took 112mcg 7 times a week, that would be 784mcg total.

Why didn't the Endo just change your dosage?

Because he thinks 100mcg will drive you hyper again? Maybe he doesnt realize he has you taking 114mcg per day now.

Your body would be happier with a consistant dose every day. Taking too little five days a week and then taking twice as much two days a week is not going to be as helpful as taking the dose you need every day.

The Endo should also know that your cholesterol is high because of your thyroid condition. Personally, I do not like cholesterol meds. I think they are hard on your body. I think it would make more sense to leave your cholesterol alone for a year and get your thyroid under control. Then you may not need cholesterol medication.

I had cholesterol meds pushed on me early on. I had a bad reaction to the drug, which has a lot to do with my opinion of them. My son was urged to take them at one time as well, but after reading about the drug, he changed his diet and got his cholesterol under control.

Yours is high mainly because of the thyroid problem. A cholesterol med may bring down your cholesterol, but it is just masking the problem. It is treating a symptom, not the cause.

Just like my taking Alprazolam (Xanax) is masking a symptom. It is somewhat controlling my anxiety, but my anxiety is caused by my disease. When they get my disease controlled, I shouldn't have anxiety. I'm willing to take the Alprazolam, because I need it to function.

I was on a beta blocker for two years to control another symptom. Again, it did not treat the root of the problem, but it was imparative to control my heart rate, so I took it.

High cholesterol is not insignificant. It should not be ignored. But if it will go away on it's own in a few months or a year by treating the root cause, then I would prefer to ignore it until it comes down on it's own.

That's just my opinion.
