So many symptoms for an underactive thyroid but doctor says its overactive?? New to this - help please

Symptoms Ive been complaining of for quite some time, but never saw a doctor:

Migraine headaches
Dizziness
Exhaustion
Hair falling out
Nails that tear like paper
Weight gain

Then about a year ago I noticed when I woke up my hands were stiff as a board.  They would be numb, tingly - very strange.  Then I got what the doctor calls trigger finger.  it almost feel like my thumb would pop out of joint..

Now the numb/tingly hands have become much worse.  It happens a couple times a day.

Im very worried.  I dont know whats going on with me.  I went to the doctor last week for the first time and they mentioned an underactive thyroid.  They did a blood test and all I remember were my TSH levels were <.01  The doctor says my thryoid is over active.

So symptoms are an underactive thyroid but she said blood test shows and overactive thryoid.  I had another blood test and am waiting for the results.  Afterwards they are sending me to an endicrinologist?? if needed..

Any ideas whats going on with me??

Thanks so much!!!

Symptoms vary according to our bodies and persons. Your body may react different than the standard symptom list. Trust me - many of us on here have had strange symptoms not even listed as one!!!
Your tsh is quite low and does suggest HYPERthyroidism.Hang in there and don't hesitate to seek and endo who specializes in thyroids if you feel your regular md can't handle it.

   Best Wishes~

I know what you mean about the hands being stiff in the morning and the trigger finger.  I had the same problems.  I also had very painful elbows (like tendonitis, I suppose).  I went to the endocronologist because an ent dr.felt my thyroid was slightly enlarged (went to him because I was having jaw pain and thought perhaps it was something with my ear).  The endo. dr. ran tests and my tsh came back low and he said that I should be losing weight like crazy (quite the opposite as I was gaining).  I did end up having my thyroid taken out as tests showed a cold nodule.  The path. report came back as micro papillary cancer (no rai needed) and hashimotos's.  So you see even though my blood results came by as hyperthyroid my symptoms were more like hypothyroid.  After the removal of my thyroid my jaw pain went away, my elbow pain went away and my hands have been fine and the trigger finger problem went away.  All those pains went away immediately after the surgery...and when I mentioned it to my Drs. they said no that it couldn't be related....well, I am no dr., but I know it was all related...i am just surprised that the symptoms went away so quickly.  I am a very stable, well adjusted person, pretty much stress free, so I am sure it isn't all in my head :).  Best of luck to you and I hope once they diagnosis you and do what needs to be done as far as medication you will feel much better.

Since I had a total thyroidectomy in July 06, I too have experienced waking up with numb hands. I think this condition is connected to the thyroid, but I just don't know what it means. I also have low calcium since the TT, so it might be related to that condition. Hang in there!

p.s. my TT was for benign nodules.
