Some input needed on lab results.....

My labs came back for B12 and RC Folate........maybe you guys can put your opinion here.

These are results:
                    12/10/07       13/02/08       11/3/08      28/10/08       07/04/10      REF RANGES

Vit. B12            214               248             256            239             270       pmol/L (150 -700)

R.C.Folate                             775                                                 1145     nmol/l  (>630 )

Keep in mind that I take B12, Calcium/D , multivitamin.

Any input on this?

Seems strange that RC Folate is so high....

Still waiting for Vit. D test to come back

I found this on the net

What does the test result mean?

Looking for reference ranges?
The doctor is looking for vitamin B12 and/or folate deficiency. If a symptomatic patient has decreased concentrations of vitamin B12 and/or folate, then it is likely that he has some degree of deficiency. The test results indicate the presence of deficiency, but do not necessarily reflect the severity of the anaemia or neuropathy associated with the deficiency.

If a patient with a vitamin B12 or folate deficiency is being treated with supplements (or with B12 injections), then normal or elevated results indicate a response to treatment.

High levels of B12 and folate are not usually monitored. Increased B12 may be seen in conditions such as leukemia or liver dysfunction. Increased folate may be seen with pernicious anaemia, vegetarian diets, or with a condition called bacterial overgrowth syndrome where bacteria multiply in the upper bowels.

Have you checked the amount of folate in your multi-vitamin? Might be that you are just getting too high a dose, with eating other folate rich things.

My Vit B12 was always horrendously low, and so was the folate, I started drinking soy milk and it shot up! Might be a mix of food intake of some form and the supplement.
Not sure.

Yeah, my dentist uses that when he numbs my mouth because my gums are very sensitive, but otherwise, I'm tough -- don't need it for the B12 shot ------------lol

They have a 'gel' out Barb that Dentists use and its also used on children and the elderly where you rub it in and then give the shot...basically a small amount of lignocaine and you dont feel a thing until it waers off (roughly 15 mins).
Just takes away the stinging sensation from the syringe and pumping the medication into the muscle.
Good stuff too lol when yr petrified of the Dentist like I am !

No doubt in my mind that you can do B12 shots.  I'm not even med endorsed and I do my own all the time.  It's a piece of cake - little ***** as the needle goes into the muscle and you're done.

Yep, your doc will have lots to read on you this time.  lol

Doc (locum Doc while mine is on holiday)  wants to see me Monday afternoon to discuss my recent labs and doppler ultrasound lol.

Probably to tell me my B12 is deficient, that my prolapses (Mitral & Tricuspid) are no worse since 4 years ago and to give me the 'usual' info on everything.
I am quite looking forward to it as my Cardiologist told me the other day that I am managing my body  very well, know my stuff in regards to my conditions and not to do any different than I am doing lol.

Maybe I can educate the Locum???? lol

After having a hospital try to get 5 bunts in ...in different places with no success after having adrenalin...then a B12 shot is nothing lol.
Also having ht e adrenalin is enough to think your having a heart attack (1000 times worse than having ventolin by nebuliser) so I think I will survive B12 shots.

I also passed my exams and got my accreditation yesterday in Med Endorsed so am qualified to inject myself now Barb so will wait until my Doc is back in just over 2 weeks from the UK and get the prescription.
Until then I'll get back on the mega B.
The other Docs in the same surgery are what I call 'quacks'.

Boy is my Doc gonna have some reading when he gets back lol.
Hives, labs, Cardio Doppler, Cardio (tomorrow) etc.
The firs tthing he'll say is :What happened Deb???"

You got the back up; and yes, hives can be caused by sensitive nerve endings.
The shots are not bad at all; just a ***** into the muscle and it's over; if done right, there's really not even any pain.......

I have no signs of neuropathy but the interesting part about it all is.....HIVES is caused by nerve endings being very active.
Coincidence?????

I will get back to the Doc tomorrow as my Doc is basking in the UK for another 3 weeks.
It does look like I am not absorbing the B12 properly too.
Thanks guys.........I had a feeling but just needed back up on this one.

I agree that your b12 levels are way too low in the range.  The range my lab uses goes to 1100 also.

I do my own shots every 2 weeks - wanted to do weekly, but my doctor wouldn't let me because my level was at 700 and he said that was high enough. I disagree and I can't get my level above 700, even with shots, so I don't know if the neuropathy would go away if it got higher or not.  My doctor told me that some of the nerve damage would be permanent because my condition went untreated for many years.

You may need to go to shots, especially if you have any neuropathy, etc.

Deb-  Your  vit B12 is way too low for a thyroid patient. The upper range on most labs will go to even 1100. It looks like you aren't absorbing a whole lot.
Are you having the deficiency symptoms of sore tongue, tingling pain in fingers and toes, etc?
I do B12 shots weekly on myself now.......my endo even agreed on the studies that in Europe they use B12 shots for thyroid neuropathy. He knows that I do the B12 shots on my own.
No matter how much I took orally, I could never get it up over 600 I think. But that was before my gallbladder surger. Now I am sure I don't absorb hardly any.
My neuropathy symptoms go away the day after my shot.....

I eat normal stuff like a normal person does (if there is such a thing lol) and try to avoid any tinned, canned or frozen foods.
I dont drink soy as I hate it and I am not a milk lover.

The multivitamin I discontinued about 4 months ago and stopped taking the B12 too (got sick of popping pills for a while...was around January).
Just started up again on the mega B plus and cranberry about 4 days ago.
So its got me puzzled as B12 doesnt have folate in it and neither does cranberry lol.
Just checked the bottles.
As for folate rich foods....I basically starved for a week, scared to eat anything because of the hives.....
Stuck to BLAND garbage stuff lol.
Puzzling????

Sorry...forgot to add.
Usually the Folate is high if the B12 is low but my B12 was lower on 13/2/08 and so was the folate..
