Stable Isoechoic Nodule ????

by beauti8, Oct 06, 2009 09:57PM
In November of 2008 I had a partial thyroidectomy to remove the right lobe of my thyroid due to enlargment causing breathing and swallowing issues, a central enlarged nodule and several smaller nodules. Six weeks later I was placed on Levothyroxine 100 mcg once a day. In August I had a follow up ultrasound for the remaining left side as it had a few small nodules when the surgury was done. The results are as follows:

Right Lobe: Surgically removed
Left Lobe: Within its pole, there is a subtle isoechoic nodule measuring 9.7mm. The remainder of the left lobe appears unremarkable.
Size: 5.2 x 1.5 x 1.9 cm
Isthmus: Normal in thickness
Other: None

Conclusion:
1. Previous surgical removal of the right lobe of the thyroid
2. The left lobe shows a stable subtle isoechoic nodule in the midpole measuring 9.7mm.

My doctor has requested I have a biopsy preformed. My questions are: Is this smething to worry about? Is a biopsy recommended? What are the chances that I will have to have another surgury and have the remainder of my thyroid removed?

Any help would be great as I am not looking forward to going through this again as this is how it started in the first place.

Hi,

I beleive that the standard practice is to biopsy anything that is 10mm or greater.  (9.7 mm is close enough).  So reckon that this is correct procedure.

Worst case you may be facing removal of the remaining half.  Doctor may also for observation if biopsy is negative.
