Stella .. on hyperparathyroidism

Here is the response from the MSK kidney stone board moderator who is a dialysis R.N.  Hope this helps .. if anything it solidifies your research to date I think.

"Cheryl
The parathyroid gland regulates calcium in the body. Serum calcium levels may be completely normal because the parathyroid is working to do what its supposed to do - but it may have to work very hard to do so - the parathyroid hormone test would indicate if the parthyroid is having to work overtime to keep the calcium levels normal.

HYPERparathyroidism can cause stones but calcium levels also affect heart rhythms and muscle coordination.

I don't know what insurance your friend has - if she is not getting the needed referrals and she is in the US, I would suggest she call her insurance company and request a Case Manager be assigned - the Case Managers have the authority to bypass normal channels and may waive a required referral if they feel it is in the best interest of the patient as well as a more economical solution. She needs to be evaluated by a good endocrinologist who can then refer her on to a good surgeon if that is necessary.  Treatment for parathyroid problems is removal of the affected parathyroid gland - we have 4 of them imbedded in the thyroid - only the affected one(s) require removal. If surgery is the plan, then the individual needs to do some serious homework and find a surgeon who really knows what they are doing - she should see a surgeon who does at least 100 of these procedure per year.

I am not aware of an increase in strokes as a result of parathyroid disorders and brittle bones does not always happen unless all the parathyroids are removed.

Hope that helps.

Beth-US"

Thank you Cherly for your kind words.  Today is a day that I can really use them.  They are making me cry because of your kindness to me.  I am so tired of being depressed one day and anxious the next or together or not at all or whatever.  I am thankful for my Jesus that He is the stability that keeps me going.  He never fails me but I wish He would hurry up and get me out of this.      love and hugs and prayers   Linda

I read them all and join in the happy dance for you.  Right foot, left foot, kick.  Can you get the picture we are all in a line and doing the dance for you.  Also am continually praying for you and those on this forum.  We need the encouragement from each other and the information.

I also called and got an appointment with an new endo.  Her staff was really nice and I asked if she was nice as I need tender loving care.  I am so wiped out over these past two years.  I take one of my ladies that I keep to her and remembered her this week and called and got an appointment in two weeks.  the other endo I called I had to do all the work getting the information for him and he wouldn't see me for 2 months.  I said no thanks that is not the kind of treatment I want.   My only other problem is the mental state that I have been in for about 6 months.  Will my thyroid fixed stop some of the mental stuff.   My latest tsh is .97 which is almost ideal.  It is just my mind now and some nervousness and still the uncertainty of the future.  I just remembered that the future is in God's hands.  Duh - sometimes I don't remember what I preach.

KelDC's remark about you found not just an endo but a parathyroid specialist just proves the wonderful care our Heavenly Father takes of us.  His timing is in His Hands.
love you all and can't wait until I can post better than I am now.

I can't rest.. I felt like doing back flips after she called me.
......... and to add-- gues who finally called me at 4:55 tonite (5 days after the FNA)

that's right.............  the mystery ENT surgeon. I couldn't get to the phone fast enough and he left a message that he would try Monday again. Apparently , he must not understand to use the cell number and not the home - or that is his way of easing his conscious.

Who cares..........I got an endo now.!!!!

Let's all sing:

Stella found an Endo, Stella found an Endo, Nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah.

Man, my case was too easy. I have lots of folks in the medical fields in my family, so getting to an Endo was a piece of cake. She also happens to be one of the best in that community. I guess that I shouldn't take it for granted.

I'm doing the happy dance....or maybe I just have to pee........nope, it's the happy dance.

CHery -- MY LITTLE TATER  :)

Thanks and yes I appreciate her thoughts. She - you and everyone is dead on "RIGHT" on all the information I have gotten. I remember back in 2003 when Dx'd with Graves and all the years of drudging along with the terrible care I got - Getting this far back then on  thyroid information took me 4 years to retrieve on my own.

NOW- since Monday and the possible hyperparathyroid situation - IT HAS ONLY BEEN DAYS !!!!!!!! and I have gotten a world of information.

Still I have better news too !!!!  That radiologist I spoke about b/c of the hyper state I was in these last 72 hours 'CALLED ME BACK AGAIN TODAY"

YEAHHHHHH!!!!

and.....he arranged an appointment with ........ a bon-i-fied .... REAL endo next Friday!!!

ONLY 1 week away.

This endo specializes in parathyroids --- heck I was told the whole staff does!!! :) I got a call from the office about 15 minutes ago confirming Friday was OK. I almost cried on the phone. !!!

They do believe I need to rush a bit due to the FNA done on Monday. Knicking the parathyroid and leaving it is not good.  All my past tests even from 2003 are available to them due to the Aurora network. and I will be bringing my current scans and labs with me Friday.

UNBELIEVEABLE!!!! I guess the endo walked up to the receptionist that called me while on the phone with the radiologist and said ---- get this woman on the phone right away and schedule her an appointment. NO REFERRAL NEEDED>

So what does everyone think I should do with THAT ENT I had?????????
