I was prescribed Synthroid when I was first diagnosed hypo in 2008 and was told to "never take anything but Synthroid"... I felt like death warmed over they whole time I was on it... I'm not sure if that was because of the med or because my doctor refused to let me get to a therapeutic dose... However, once I got to see an endo (I could not get a referral from my pcp, but got if from another doctor), I was switched to generic levothyroxine and did much better than I'd done on the brand name Synthroid.
I was later switched to Tirosint, which is a gelcap and did okay on that, for 5 years, until the price became prohibitive (not covered by my insurance at the time and now not covered by my Medicare drug plan).
In August of 2014, I switched to Levoxyl and have done very well on it. The cost is reasonable, though not covered by my insurance (I haven't refilled yet this year, so not sure what it's going to cost) and I've no plans to switch to anything else.
Thank you. Interesting. I never had any problems with Synthroid over the course of many years of taking it...only recently.

An interesting question. Go to the FDA site and research Synthroid. "Synthroid" is not necessarily "synthroid". By that I mean, for various reasons the brand name is the same, however the composition has changed several times. Also look up Levoxyl.
