Symptons leading up to Hypothroid

by 16101996, Nov 06, 2008 01:51PM
Hello

I have just joined this forum after being  diagnosed with an under active thyroid last week. I was prescribed Levothyroxine Sodium Tablets. The dose I have to take is 2 x 25mcgs. I have recently gone through the menopause (No period for just over a year) and on the run up to my diagnosis I tended to put all my symptons down to the menopause (Weight gain, tiredness, headaches, loss of libido etc...)

I was having a lot of problems with numbness and tingling in my right hand especially, and pain travelling up the same arm. I  also experienced numbness and tingling in the left side of my face and lip, this sensation is like the numbness you get after having an injection from the dentist, also numbness and tingling  in my buttocks and thighs legs and feet. This  affected both my sides but mainly my left side. The numbness and tingling were the reasons I went to the Doctors and that was how I found out what was wrong with me. I have been taking the tablets for 9 days now and I have to have another blood test in 5/6 weeks time so they can check out if my dosage is right. The Doctor also explained that my kidneys arent functioning 100% and that my Blood pressure is too high at the moment. Would you know if my kidneys will  go back to normal in time? and has this happened because of my under active thyroid?

I have just returned to work this week after being off sick for three weeks. I am still feeling realy worn out, so much so that instead of doing my usual 6 hours  per day I have been working 4 hours per day instead, but I am still worn out. When I come home from work I have to go straight to bed for an hour or two. Do you think I should go off work on sick leave again until my energy levels return as I can not manage to do my job to the full capacity?  My mental capacity is very muggy and it is taking me twice as long to even input data onto the computer etc.  I am finding it quite a strain communicating with my work colleagues and I have to force myself into conversation with them.

Another thing that is happening to me is that I cannot stop scratching myself especially at night although it is happening through the day as well. (This seems to happen when I am warm) It seems to happen more when I go to bed at night .The places affected that I have to itch are my armpits, around waist and the groin area and back, palms of hands and bottom of  left foot, also behind my ears. This really affects the amount of sleep that I am getting. This calms down a bit after I apply calamine lotion. Would you know if this is a side effect of the tablets?  Whilst my numbness and tingling have improved a bit I do still have the numbness and tingling in my hands especially my right hand.

I would appreciate comments on what I have posted and I would be interested to see if anyone else has had problems similar to mine. Has anyone any idea how long it may be before I start to feel better again?

Many Thanks

Have you had your vitamin B-12 levels checked?  I had the tingling in my hands and the bottom of my feet - dr said that pointed to b-12 deficiency, so he ordered the blood work.  I now inject 1000 mcg every 2 weeks and that helps with the tingling a lot.  B-12 deficiency will also cause fatigue, etc and I've asked my dr to increase it to once weekly because I get so tired in between shots - have to wait for blood work.  I've begun itching quite a bit also and not sure what causes that.  I've been on synthroid since June - started @ 100 mcg, dropped down to 88 mcg and go for blood work tomorrow morning to see how things look now.  Have you talked with your dr about all these symtoms?
