Synthroid over medicated

by barrettsark, Dec 26, 2008 04:14PM
I have been being over medicated for about two months now.  Back in Nov I was on 137 and my TSH was .0.33 and my endo lowered my does to 112.  I started to feel OK not great but just OK.  Well it's all going down hill or maybe I'm just having a bad day?  I got my blood test results on Teu and my TSH is 0.07 and I have the shakes and some anxiety and depression.  Today I feel like **** and can't stop crying.  They loweres my dose to 100.  Do you all think that is is the was one would feel being over medicated?

Normally the Doc shouldve stopped the Synthroid for 2-3 days to get your levels down faster but apparently he/she hasnt.
It will only take about 2 weeks for your levels to start dropping and then a lot of the anxiety, tears and hyper symptoms will go.
I have been there twice with 'going too high' so know how you feel.
I seem to get so far then bang, topple over the edge.
I was on 75mcg thyroxin for a month then went hyper, cut it down to 62.5 then went hyper and now am alternating mon-wed-fri 62.5 and then tues-thurs-sat-sun 50mcg and so far doing ok.
This is tweaking your meds Barrattsark and can take a while to get them right but at least you are on the right track.
I would be asking for 3-4 weekly bloods and not 6 weeks then take it from there with each dose change the Doc orders.
You are nearly there!

I dont know how long i can do this I have seven children to take care of and I just want to get this worked out.  When this all started in Oct My TSH was at 56.  I had never had anxiety a day in my life before this.  I really need some help

Have you had tests for free T3 and free T4?  If your doc has been testing for TSH and total T4 and total T3 only, it could be that your T4 type med. has suppressed TSH to the point that your doc lowers your meds., yet you still do not have enough free T3 to get relief from your hypo symtoms.  I had this very problem where my T4 meds were pushing my total T4 to the very high end of the range, suppressing my TSH to the point that I had some of the hyper symptoms, yet my temperature was still low and my hypo symptoms had not disappeared either.   We finally proved this when I got free T3 tested and it was in the low end of the range even though T4 was extremely high.  All this was due to problems converting T4 to T3.  Now my meds. have been changed to a T4/T3 type--Armour thyroid.  I have been on Armour only 2 weeks, but so far, very happy.

My endo only test my TSH and my T4 Free which was 1.5.  I really was feeling goo but I got slammed with feeling crappy today.  I did test positive for antibodies and I have read that you can swing back and forth between hypo and hyper.  I dont know alot about it yet just started to looking it up online.

So you had anxiety also when yout TSH was low?

No, I didn't have anxiety, but I did have some heart palpitation until I reduced med. for a while.  This then threw me back into hypo again, until I got my med. changed to Armour.

When will you be seeing doctor again, so that you can be tested for free T3 as well as free T4 and TSH?

Good thoughts on Gimel's part here for you.

Your labs are not pinpointing any real conversion levels. You should be tested for the Free T3 to see if you meds are converting to the way you need them to - to righ these symptoms.

As said get the Ft4 and Ft3 test - with TSH.  I find this a higher Free t3 in me - I feel no symptoms of hypot at all.

I am also on Armour thyroid.

You look 'em right in the eye and say, I'd like a 3rd generation TSH, Free T4 and Free T3 please. I'm buying!  It may catch him of guard.  Mine said, Oh you've been doing some research.
I'm not on synthroid yet.  A couple weeks ago I felt like I would jump out of my skin.   I was off the meds pre-RAI.  I accidently ate a handful of nuts with SEASALT 3 days before.  I could not believe how bad I felt.  So be careful what you eat and see if it makes a difference.
You have seven children.  Assign the older ones to take care of the younger ones.  And take a whole sleeping pill.  You really need some rest.

I hate taking medication to sleep.  Through out the day I'm so tired but then night comes I fall asleep but wake up are 2 AM.  Then I can't go to sleep.  I wish I could sleep through all this and wake up when it's over.

If its any consolation to you, I have had anxiety on BOTH ends of the scale...Hyper and Hypo.
Anytime my levels are out of 'whack' I get the anxiety.
At first I always thought the anxiety was from being HYPER.......I soon realised differently.
I get it when I am BOTH.
See your Doc and DEMAND the TSH, Free T3 & Free T4.......
I have suffered with both Hyper and Hypo as many others here have and I am sure they will tell you the same.
The anxiety is from the levels being out of 'whack'.
Good luck and I hope you find a happy medium soon.
