Synthroid

Hey there,
I am a 20 year old female and Have just been diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. This is very scary for me. I have been prescribed Synthroid wich I have been taking regularly now for 4-5 days. Once I take my pill I find it very hard to sit still. I am very figity and warm. I dont know if this is because my dose is to high or if my body is still adjusting to the new medication. Can someone tell me if this is normal and will the effects fade ?

It is your body adjusting to the medicine. It generally takes 6-8 weeks for the pill to finally kick in. I know its not fun. 25  mg is a small dose. Usually start you at that one because they don't  want you to go into complete shock. With a higher tsh level, your body is going to habe some major symptoms. Some anxiety is okay. It is helping your body to move a little faster. We just don't want to much.  So I would give it a couple more weeks at least if your body starts to reject it so to speak you will know. There are many other ones to try. Keep us updated, welcome!

Some times my heart rate is fast. and I dont have any problem sleeping once I get to sleep. Its getting to sleep thats the problem. I have always been very sensitive to any medication. Even tylenol makes me loopy. So perhaps it is just my body getting used to the medication. I have called my doctor and am awaiting a phone call to see what we are going to do about this. My doctor also stated that my TSH level was high to him as well.

A TSH level of 9 would be considered high by my doctor and would indicate hypo.

When do you go back to get your labs re done? I know my doctor once told me that I would not feel any effect of the thyroid medication until at least 2-3 weeks.

I just changed my dosage as well to 100mcg of levothroid. I had started out at 200mcg about 14 yrs ago, but last two years have been having trouble getting my dosage correct. My TSH level seems to have been dropping the last two years. My last TSH level in Oct 08 was .44, within normal range, but my dr. wanted to drop my dosage due to other on going symtoms.

I have never been able to sleep for more than 3hrs a night due to hyper/graves disease. That was 15 yrs ago.

Call your doctor or the nurse, they should be able to tell you if you need to go back to get blood work done or wait a little longer to see the medication start working. Is your heart rate fast?

My dose is 0.25 mg and my tsh level was 9 I think if that is the right one. It was supposed to be between 0.2-4.50 and mine was 9 !

What is your dose? What was  your TSH level?

It takes about 2-3 weeks for the medication to actually start working. It could be that your body does not recognize the synthorid yet and your hyper symtoms are just progressing. Make sure you get tested 6-8 weeks after you have been on Synthroid to make sure the dosage is not too high or too low.
