HI Doc,
My wife (29 years old) delivered a baby girl in Oct 2007.she is breastfeeding. Her period started again at Jan 2008. From last 2 months she started complaining of fatigue and irregular period / heavy period.
We went to doc and she ordered blood test her other blood report are normal but two of them or out of range
1. Absolute Monocytes : 174
2. TSH 3RD GENERATION: 33.30 mIU/L
Her mother was also diagnosed with thyroid problem around 2.5 years ago
My question:
1. Why this happened at the age of 29 years with my wife, generally these problems are seen in woman at the age of 40 above
2. Does this problem rose due to pregnancy / post baby delivery
3. What we have to do now
4. is this problem is fully cured and she can discontinue the medicine or she has to take the medicine for whole life
5. Child is still breastfeeding, does hypothyroid effect the baby thru Brest milk
6. Will the medication will affect the baby

did she have any other tests run and abnormal results? some of the results may be difficult to gage right now until she stops breastfeeding though. Does she plan to stop when the baby is about 1 year? If so have her retest this winter with a broader panel of tests. thyroid antibodies and prolactin I'd suggest.
