TSH flipping

by Ga7, Sep 21, 2007 03:58PM
I had my thyroids remove completely 25 years ago, well my TSH got up into the 60’s 6 months ago due to generic type synthroid meds.  I was put on 137mcg and then after 6 weeks levels drop to TSH 11.5 with T4 at 1.4, Then dose was moved up to 150mcg. After 4 weeks started to get chest flutters and nervousness.  Went to my cardiologist and he suggested I get my levels checked again, so had my endo do another test and it came back TSH 3.5 and T4 1.8. Well we checked my levels again after two more weeks and the TSH went to 9.1 and T4 1.4 , what could have happened? I take the pill every morning before food at least 45 minutes with full glass of water. He has now up my levels to 175mcg. Is this a good move on his part? He will check levels again in 8 weeks. The same lab is doing all the test.

The thyroid levels take time to stabalize. I know I went through many years of trying to stabalize. My doc recommended only synthroid because he said the levels were more stable. Also, he recommended asking the pharmacy what date it was made and sent, as it loses potency over time. It should be fresh from the pharmacy - and you can ask to find out. I think, too, the stressors we deal with in life everyday, depending on the level of stress, can increase or decrease the amount we expend. That's just a thought. It's tough to focus on reducing stress when we're so stressed out from the symptoms of the disease. You must have felt awful and probably still do. Just keep faith and get that lab work.

My TSH and FT-4 has done this with every 10 week testing for 11 years. Can't figure it out.  I am treated Hyper/Graves' with some thyroid function left.

Maybe your thyroid is trying to grow back or antibodies are attacking what tissues is left from surgery.

Next test with TSH and FT-4 have them do a FT-3, to see how they relate to each other and if there might be another thyroid issue going on.

Good Luck!
