Taking Levoxyl

by Joanne49, May 06, 2009 06:31PM
I was told not to eat or drink for an hour after taking my medication.  The info sheet that came with the drug does say not to eat for 30-60 minutes.  My question is about coffee with NO cream & sugar.  Do I have to wait 30-60 minutes to drink that.  It is what I crave when I wake up.  The food can wait!

Caffeine is not as bad as fiber in interfering with the absorbtion of hypothyroid meds.  However, it does interfere...real bummer, I know.  Google "levothyroxine + caffeine" if you want more info.

I have  yet to hear of many people letting anything come between them and their coffee first thing in the morning, if you are a coffee person.  : )  One of the experts may have a different idea, but I think there is a post in here somewhere about that very conversation.  You might do a search and see if you come up with anything.  I thought the biggest issue is calcium and now I have heard fiber may bind with the synthroid and make it either ineffective or less effective.

We had to have been typing at the same time.  There were no replies, when I first started typing.  Hello.

Thanks for the replies.  I will try the google search you suggest goolarra.  It has been about 2 weeks now and most of the time I am okay waiting for my coffee, but there are days.

I am taking my calcium in the afternoon, and my tricor, prempro, and multi vitamin after supper.

Can I have the coffee after 30 minutes or should I wait the full 60 like I do with the food and my other morning pills.

Thirty minutes is one thing...an hour, no way!

It is the temperature of the coffee that can affect the absorption of the synthroid. It is recommended to take it with water.

I love my coffee with liberal doses of milk and sugar.  Since I have to lay off the calcium with the synthroid...I have nearly completely given up my coffee.  Yes, life is a sadder existance without it....still looking for a good replacement.

I learned to drink my coffee black for the LID, and never went back to having it with milk.
