Tests and prognosis

by Florabelle, Mar 23, 2009 09:10AM
Dear Doctor,
While being treated for migraines awhile ago a scan revealed a tiny 'thing' on my pituitary gland that the doctors and technicians said was most likely nothing to worry about.   My migraines went away as I got older and I stopped thinking about it until just recently, when I lost a great deal of weight and the incidence of hives returned. I've been to a gastro and ruled out stomach and colon issues and stopped right there because, honestly, I don't want to regain all the weight that piled on by itself before.  My former GP said that gain was probably due to 'unconscious snacking'  and that my hives were due to 'nerves' .  She wasn't a shining example of medicine, I realize that, but I'm too short to blimp up again and I'm afraid I'll get some half-hearted doctor who says, "Oh, this is blah blah.  Take this prescription and see me in 6 months."  So, I said all that to ask the following:

What tests should be given to check my thyroid function *and*  to see if I'm actually through menopause?
How often should follow-up appointments be scheduled?
Should I see a gynecologist regarding this?
Endocrinologists, for example,  are rare as hens teeth in my area, is there another specialist who can follow up if I can't get a timely appointment with my specialty physician?

Thanks so much!
Flora
Thank you so much,
Flora

Hi Flora and welcome! This is the patient forum and you can find the expert forum where you can post questions.
My suggestion as a patient is that you find a dr who specializes in pituitary and get a follow up done.
Your gyno can start the process by testing your  FSH, LH, TSH, Free T4 and Free T3, and Prolactin, PTH.
You need to start somewhere, and hopefully get referred to someone good that way.
So sorry to hear what your doctor said to you...unexcusable!
