The Fire Within

I was recently diagnosed with an under active thyroid in Devember 07. In January 08 I began taking Armour Thyroid.  Prior to taking the medication I was having occasional hot flashes and night sweats - now I am having continous severe hot flashes throughout the day and because of the night sweats I get very little sleep.  My body feel like it is continously on fire - I am either stripping off my clothes, fanning or sweating profusely. Is there anything I can do to get some relief?

I was on .5mg of estrogen after the hysterectomy after about 18months I stopped taking it because I was'nt having hot flases and still hve on ovary.

Thanks for the advise I do have an appointment with the specialist this week and will speak with my OBGYN also. I only pray that a balance will follow.

Yes it is worth it - are you on estrogen? Armour is very different as AR states and it does effect your homones.

I would guess you are in an early menopause correct? a partial Hysterectomy will do that.  During this period  Armour will be hard to balance and you really have to get to know your meds and symptoms to find any peace whether on Synthroid or Armour.

Speak to your doctor and post all your meds you are taking many sites are available to you to look at to get some relief while you are in this period.

Thanks for the reply.  I had a partial hysterectomy at 40 and now I'm 49.  I have had several of the thyroid test ran at the hospital.  The first time in the beginning of 2007 I had the test run everyting was within the normal range.  After gaining almost 20 pounds in a course of about 4 weeks my doctor sent me to a thyroid specialist and he had the test range again and also did a biopsy befor prescribing the medicine. So now I'. wondering if it's worth it taking the meds.

Are you sure Armour is the right drug for you?

Many people ask for it because it is "natural". It is much more than that. It provides T3 as well as T4, and unless you are having trouble converting T4 to T3, you do not need that extra T3.

The fact that you are of an age where menopause may be contributing to hormone imbalances complicates diagnosing your symptoms without lots of blood tests.

Unless you have had tests run showing you are having conversion problems, you might want to have a serious talk with your doctor about trying a different thyroid hormone replacement drug.
