The effect of hypothyroidism on blood sugars

by JAR2009, Jul 10, 2009 05:24AM
My recent tsh level was 7.0. I have been experiencing severe pain all over in muscles for about a month now. My blood sugars are very brittle lately with very sudden drops below 50 with severe hypoglycemia s/sx then spiking to over 300s with just eating a normal meal that never spiked my blood sugars before. Other s/sx I have been experiencing is severe fatigue (unable to barely walk to bathroom without severe weakness, diaphoresis, short of breath), hair falling out all of a sudden by the handfuls, and severe sensitivety to any type of light for about 5 days.
I recently went in for my 6month lab work about two weeks ago to my dr. and all I was experiencing at that time was the severe pain all over from my neck to my toes (not in my joints but in the muscles, and rib cage).
She checked a sedrate which was normal (in the past at times was 4-5 times above the normal), but it was normal this time.
I have had bouts of this pain off and on for about about 3 or 4 years now, but has gotten alot worse.
I have been on levoxyl 100mcg for over a year at that dose, before that levoxyl 75mcg for about 4 years at which time I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I have been on a dose of 150mcg of levoxyl for 3 days now and I am just starting to feel a little bit of energy where I am able to stay out of the bed/recliner for more than 10 minutes. I started feeling a little better last night and was able to take my  first shower in over a week but experienced shortness of breath, weakness, diaphoresis. Had to rest for aprox. 30 minutes in the recliner when I got out of the shower before I felt enough strength to get up and put my moisturizer on my face etc.
Yesterday, my blood sugars was better(did not have the big drops or big spikes) but stayed just under 200 most of the day and evening...no matter what I ate. My aim is for my blood sugars to stay under 150 due to I was recently diagnosed by my opthmalogist with anurysisms on the vessels of my eyes which was not there last eye exam.
My question is can the hypothyroidism cause all these symptons I have mentioned above or is there most likely another issue that needs to be investigated. My dr. seems to think it is all caused by my thyroid right now, but I have had the severe pain in the past when my thyroid levels were in normal range
Thanks for any input you can give on this subject.
