Thyrogen shortage?

I just went to see my endo today for a 6 month check up and was told that there is a shortage on Thyrogen in the US and that I'd have to off meds for 6 weeks this time instead of getting the thyrogen injections like I have since my second scan.  I simply cannot fathom going off meds again for 6 weeks. It was a horrible experience for me the first time and I simply do not have three more years to get myself back on track again after it's over.  I have opted to wait 6 more months being fully aware of the risk in the hopes that Thyrogen will become available again. Has anyone heard of this shortage and any clue when it will end because I'm not happy here!

That's one of the "other" issues many of us advocates are trying to resolve with the FDA. I now its disheartening and every attempt is going on to rectify this.

Ok Stella, I just read that article and I am very upset!  From the looks of it, nobody will be able to get Thryogen for followup treatments after TT unless they meet certain criteria?  OMG I'M GONNA DIE.  I cannot go off my meds every stinking time I need a scan. I WON"T. I will find the thyrogen myself on the blackmarket!  I was so sick when I went off them the first time, so so so sick. Maybe I'll read that list and bribe my doc into making me meet some sort of criteria.

Idk, my endo said there was basically NO Thyrogen available anywhere right now.  He said that usually in this situation mainly people with heart problems and the elderly get first dibs and even they aren't getting any.  I'm kind of on "hold" waiting for it to become available.  Otherwise he's forcing me to go off meds in January. PLEASE LET THERE BE SOME!

Liz,

I had my TT in March-10; I had my Thyrogen and RAI in May-10.  there was no mention of shortages or a delay in my treatment due to Thyrogen.  there is however a shortage of nuclear medicine (I confirmed with the Nuclear MD who did my treatment) which delayed my treatment by about 2 weeks.  Maybe this is an issue with your particular type of insurance or maybe its actually the Isotopes that are not readily available?

In any case, I wish you luck in getting what you need!
