Thyroid Awareness/ January. Just a little part you can do please.

I haven't seen much talk on the January campaign for Thyroid Awareness coming next month. Here's just a little part you can do to make sure your loved ones and others YOU come in contact with can see  - to bring the attention to this important issue we are facing here on our Thyroid Board daily.

Could you have saved yourself alot of grief - if you KNEW to how to Check Your Neck monthly for signs? I may have.

Reach out on your other social networks or when you are out and send THIS message to them on how important Checking Your Neck is - just like other self exams do.

I was shocked this morning to NOT see anything on youtube with how to check your neck for thyroid issues. I saw heards of information with breast exams,/testicle exams but nothing on thyroid - especially as THIS disease has grown to epidemic levels in the last decade. GLOBALLY.

Its a little part you can do for "the team" and could essentially have someone find out something that would otherwise have been missed - As we know how NON- serious this disease is and mostly marked as "non-serious"  - in the medical world on labs (TSH only) and symptoms.

So reach out to your connections each day and pass the importance on how vital a Thyroid Neck Check is. Thank you so much for adding awareness to the cause!

** The only thing I want to add regarding this MedHelp reference is the REPEAT needed after the visual exam in the mirror. A REPEAT swallow with the person's fingers on the thyroid bed of the neck is needed and while the swollowing is happening the fingers move along the sides to feel any swelling or nodules - if present.

Sometimes 2 or 3 swollows is needed with the fingers pressing near the thyroid along the neck to locate nodules or goiter.

I was sent to do a ultrasound of my throat because my dr told me my thyroid blood result was high. So the result of the Ultrasound show that I have on the right side I have thyroid lobe its dimesions to be with normal limits measuring 4.4 x 1.4 cm and on the left side thyroid lobe upper range of normal measuring 4.3 x 1.7 cm. small benign cyst measuring 1.2 x 1.2. This is the first time I heard this, so now my Dr sent me to a specialist at the Hospital. If this is something to take it seriously?

Good stuff...I bring it up with everyone i meet...I start out by showing off my neck after surgery was done to take 1/4 of my thyroid...it is now a pink line but the discussion is open and I am amazed at how many people don't even know what the thyroid is let alone what can go so wrong with it...why am I surprised...I didn't know much either...before i had to learn it all. So good thread! Good stuff!

Sounds interesting regarding the video.  
I also want to comment that you cannot always feel nodules, so it is also important to remember to have your follow up ultrasounds of your thyroid as well.  :)
Mine are deep within the thyroid towards the back.

Its odd you mentioned that Red! - I just received an email that a video will be coming the first week of January titled "I am the Face of Thyroid Disease"

As soon as I get the details I will post more but it wouldn't hurt for everyone to make a short video saying that and get it ready to send.

I have a t-shirt which says, I am the face of Thyroid Disease. When I wear it, it creates discussions with strangers asking me what it means. Hopefully our January will be warm (supposed to be summer here but continual rain and low temps!) and I will wear it often!
