Thyroid FNA results A-typical cells

by Gammynumnums, Oct 31, 2008 12:31AM
Recently during a physical exam, my doctor discovered a nodule on my Thyroid.  He sent me for an ultra-sound.  The diagnosis was I had a multinodular goiter which contained cysts but also some nodules that they weren't sure about.  I was referred to an endocrinologist.  She also gave me an ultra-sound and felt I needed a biopsy.  I had two nodules 3.5mm one on the right lobe and one on the left lobe.  The right nodule had some calcification.  I had a fine needle biopsy six samples on each nodule.  The biopsy results were that there was no malignancy but I had A-typical cells.  My doctor wants to see me again for follow-up to discuss options.  I would like more information on this so when I go into my doctor I have some idea what I'm dealing with.  I am 61 years old.  My thyroid function tests were all normal.  My endocrinologist also tested me for antibodies, calcitronin and parathyroid hormone.  My sister has Hashimotos and my 35 year old daughter has thyroid nodules (which she hasn't followed up on) and had a tumor removed from her parathyroid.
