Thyroid Goiter/Nodules/Cysts

Please tell me how to read this. New to thyroid issues. The right thyroid lobe measures approximately 5.2 cm superior to inferior by 1.6 cm by 1.5 cm transverse. There are two focal leasions in the right thyroid lobe measured by the sonographer......cysts area noted in the upper pole of the right thyroid lobe measuring 6.9mm by 3.2mm by 7.1mm. Tiny hypoechoic area which is likely cystic noted in the lower pole of the left thyroid lobe measuring 2.5mm by 1.7mm by 2.1mm. The left thyroid lobe measures 4.7cm by 1.4cm by 1.3 cm. Two separate lesions measured in the left thyroid lobe. The complex cystic and solid appearing ovoid nodule noted in the upper pole of the left thyroid lobe which measures approximately 7.2mm by 4.5mm by 7.1mm. Hypoechoic cystic appearing nodule in the medial aspect of the mid left thyroid lobe measures 3.0mm by 3.5mm by 1.6mm. The thyroid isthmus is approximately 3mm in thickness. Impression - 1. Thyromegaly, 2. Bilateral thyroid lesions are present as described, most likely represent multinodular thyroid goiter. My Free T3 was high at 4.9. My T3 reverse at .32. I have had extreme fatigue, lethargy. Unable to exercise or do simple tasks without feeling spent. Choking sensation in neck. Heart palpitations, achy left chest/shoulder blade. Sore joints from knee down. Aching lower back. Insomnia, brainfog, heavy/lg.clotted/irregular periods. Irritability. Unable to focus, concentrate and forget things. Midwife thought it was lack of progesterone as i am 39 and considered perimenopause. Symptoms got worse second month of taking prog. cream. Found out after tests my estrogen/prog. hormones were normal and didnt need it. stopped taking it a month ago. symptoms continue and worsen each day. noticable weight gain when symptoms began about 15 lbs in 2 mos. Now starting to lose weight, not eating....sweating profusely without working out. two months ago i paddled 10 miles at a time, ran miles everyday. very active workout ethic. now unable to walk at a distance with breathing heavy and feeling tired. i am frustrated. i have three small children to take care of and my mind is saying go but the body isnt reacting. appointment with endo. in two weeks and follow up with cardiologist as well. help me. never experienced this type of physical limitations in my life. what to do?

Hmmm, considering you are not already hypo you may not want the surgery. Being hypo really is terrible and I feel that unless people have it, they don't truly understand how horrible you can feel. I get the impression people just think we "make up" our symptoms or that we complain alot, lol.
Also, my friend who had the surgery originally was hyper after the surgery she had hypo symptoms but her lab results were "fine". Another common problem us hypos run in to, you can have all the symptoms and perfect labs and so a doctor will not treat you. This is worse because then you are left feeling terrible with no resolve.
It is your decision of course, but if you are not yet hypo, I would skip the surgery. There could be a chance you may never have to have the surgery and to make yourself hypo will be something you will regret.
Good luck!!! : )

P.S. No i don't seem to have any Thyroid problems as of now,it's just the Nodules and one of the 3 has a suspicious blood flow but not showing Cancer with the one biopsy. They say 20 % there could still be some Cancer that the biopsy may not detect. Then they say 80%  might be nothing and did Surgery for nothing. My mom has Lymphoma Cancer but they said that's different than Thyroid Nodules Cancer. So i'm just thinking off Hereditary as well. My dad's mother had a Thyroid Goiter and she's the only one on both family sides that had the Thyroidectomy. Thanks for your support.

Thank you for your healthy advice. Geez it's tough to decide just because of the side effects of becoming Hypo and dealing with the Thyroid meds.
Friends tell me it's no big deal but they never went through it,they say they know other family members who went through it. Yes,like i said i don't want to find out later in an older age. Oh dear. I'm in great shape right now and i don't want to lose my energy. I feel like i should do it to be on the safe side. Well ok i will do some more research and think about it a little more.

p.s. surgery is always has better outcomes when you are younger and in better health so you are correct in saying that you don't want to wait to only find out you need surgery when you have become older.

i am going for a biopsy for a nodule tomorrow and i totally thought about just doing the surgery instead of having to keep an eye on it.
if you have the surgery you can become hypo, for me, not a problem because I already am and i am on synthroid for the rest of my life.
Not sure if you have thyroid problems other than the nodules.
My friend was hyper, had a cancerous nodule and had the surgery (removing half the thyroid). She then became hypo (by symptoms) yet her levels were in "normal range" according to the doctors. So she suffered with symptoms for a long time. Eventually, she would pass out while cleaning. She went to the doc, had an MRI and they found she had a huge nodule over her aorta. Needless to say, they wanted to remove it right away. During this surgery they found three nodules on the remaining portion of her thyroid gland, one of which ended up being cancerous.
Point of the story - if they had removed the whole thyroid gland in the beggining she would not have had all these other problems for years to come. So it just makes me wonder.
On the flip side, any surgery is always a risk and that should be taken in to consideration as well. There are far to many errors made by hospitals and you can end up having worse problems that are non related to your original problems.
It's a tough choice and a lot to think about!
Good luck with your decision and keep us posted!

I just got diagnosed with Thyroid Goiter Nontoxic Multinodular. They say i have a Follicular Lesion wich could be 20% risk for Thyroid Cancer.
Right Thyroid Lobe L: 4.7  W:1.6 H:1.6cm A single Heterogeneous Nodule.
Mid portion Right Thyroid measuring .3by.3by.1cm.no increased vascularity.
Left lobe L: 5  W 1.3  H 1.2cm  Multiple Nodules. The largest 1.3 by .8 by .7cm. Lrgest one has no increased vascularity. The smaller nodule appears Homogeneous and Does have increased peripheral flow. Isthmus measures 2.4mm. Needle biopsy showed no cancer. I'm looking for a very healthy opinion. Should i get a Thyroidectomy or keep going every 4 to 6 months and keep getting Needle Biopsy and Ultrasounds, over and over again? They say doing that won't change the suspicios blood flow in my left nodule on Thyroid. I have major anxiety and so far 3 of my friends say it would be less stressful and less anxiety getting the Thyroidectmy than just wait it out for months and months. I'm 40 and don't want to find out my nodules grew by the time i'm 50 or 60 then get surgey. Please i need advice before i decide. If i do surgery i want it in Summer,Summer 2012 is almost here. Thank you!

You sound just like how I have felt over the last 18 months...I had a benign multinodular goiter that was removed on 2/14/07.  Just within the last month, I have been feeling better than I have in a very long time.  I am soooo glad I had the TT done.  I never knew that a thyroid could cause so much trouble.  I too had the heart palpitations which were the most scary...I was also told that nothing was wrong with my heart by a cardiologist...I am even in the process of loosing the 20 lbs that I have put on in the last year, and it's coming off with the help of Weight Watchers...If you end up having surgery, it is so worth it...anything to get rid of all the nasty symptoms... Good Luck...

Your ultrasound is showing that you have an enlarged thyroid lobe and multinodular goiter.  Your isthmus is fine.  I wouldn't worry too much about the cysts - they're always benign.  It's the solid matter in the complex nodule that you have to worry about.  But considering that there's only a 5% chance of it being something bad, the odds are in your favor.  Your nodules are still small and will probably be monitored.  Most drs will consider them to be too small to test by FNA at this point (under 1cm)

Would you mind posting the rest of your test results, along with ranges?  Have you had your antibodies tested yet?

I'm sorry you're feeling so cruddy.  There are many of us here who understand completely what you're going through.

Please keep us posted.
