Thyroid and Sore Throat

I just have a quick question. I had my blood drawn last Tuesday to test my thyroid, but the Friday before my throat started hurting. It wasn't bad, and I assumed it was my sinuses dripping or something. Well, it's been a week and it still hurts! It's getting worse and the outside of my neck hurts. My ears and my collar bone have even started to hurt a little...but the throat is were it's at. Any my throat only hurts when I swallow but my neck hurts continuosly. My doctor just drew blood based on my symptoms but never felt my neck. Is sore throat and neck soreness a symptom of thyroid disorders?

Thanks!

The Corporate processed foods can be the problem, stop eating processed foods. Try to buy local and have thyroid covered if you need x-rays of any type. Also, our homes are full of chemicals. From paint to most products used for building, and what we put into them in terms of furnishings. Rammed Earth seems to be the ticket to healthier living environments and bodies.

I had a nodule too, tried shrinking it with levo then they took me off of levo and ended up removing the left half of my thyroid that the nodule was on.  Still have sore throat and glands in neck hurt periodically. ... plus the general fatigue and insomnia that comes and goes. Finally started levo for hypothyroidism in April 2015. Has your doctor ran bloodwork on you?

A couple of months back I thought I had strep. Went to urgent care to find out that not only was it not strep, my thyroid was enlarged. Had all of my blood work done, all is normal. Went on 5 days of prednisone to reduce the inflammation in my thyroid.....nothing. On to an ultrasound. 4cm nodule in my right thyroid. Have felt like total pooh for two months now, no energy, sore throat, neck, headaches....just miserable. Went in for the FNA (biopsy) last Friday, hoping for good news this Friday, really concerned though because of how I feel. I'm miserable.

Anyone know anyone that had to have a nodule removed? If it is benign, I can't imagine they'd want me to keep it in there based solely on the way I've felt for two months now.  I'm such a mess. Anyone have experience with this? I'm all ears.

I've had same symptoms on and off for over a year now. Sore throat , sore neck and shoulders.  I've taken antibiotics everytime and it clears up in days.  Never had any of these symptoms until I was diagnosed with hypothyroid.  I started taking Synthroid at first and then switched to Armour Thyroid, still get the sore throat and neck pain.

I have hyper thyroid and a colloid goiter?!? For the past month my throat has been sore. Usually at night. Doesnt hurt at all until i swollow. Recently changed my meds to methimazole. I went to my doctor about 3 weeks ago and said viral. Im going to make an appt tomorrow because ive had some difficulty when i swollow things like meat. So not sure if the goiter is growing or what. Really freaks me out and then i feel dumb when i go to the doctor and they say "virus". Ugh any help would be helpful.

A few months ago after having an ultrasound on my neck my gp indicated that I have 5 or maybe more nodules on my thyroid - finally got to an endocrinologist for a biopsy to be done via some sort of needle however she said ultra sound that I already had and that had been sent to her was rather 'vague' so I'm scheduled to have another ultrasound to my head and neck ( I don't know why my neck - hope I don't have nodules on my brain lol) Anyways that wont be done until October and then I cant get to see her again until January.  Now along with a stiff neck feeling and sore throat, ears and headache I am hoping it isnt going to get worse before that time.  (however these new symptoms could just be indication that I am getting a cold with ear aches. You posted in March .. what has developed and how are you feeling?

SAW YOUR POST AND TRIGGERED MY MEMORY SEEING THIS : Inflammatory nodules: These benign nodules are commonly seen in patients who suffer from chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland. Most inflammatory nodules do not cause noticeable symptoms, although one rare form of these nodules can result in extreme NECK AND THROAT PAIN. Patients with a history of thyroiditis and postpartum women are at greatest risk for developing inflammatory nodules.
HOPE THIS IS HELPFUL.

I just had my ultrasound and it showed a cyst and a  nodule on my left thyroid.  My neck feels swollen and it feels like I have something stuck in my throat, like I tried to swallow a chicken bone.  :D

I also get a sore throat, generally at night, but attributed that to allergies.

You may be on to something here.

Hi,
I also have sore throat on my left side now with neck pain, similar to a stiff neck. I would like to know if this has anything to do with low thyroids. i was perscribed with Armour Thyroid and have not been taking it for the past few months. I am always so skeptical when it comes to popping pills. I am also very anxious lately especially in the AM upon waking.I would like to know, how long does viral infections take. Or are anxiety and sore throat symptoms of a sluggish thyroid?
Thanks,
Sandra

had a thyroid crisis april 1, felt a blocking in throat and continuous need to cough.  the anxiety was the worst, felt i was leaving earth.  blood showed hypothyroid and started on low dose armour.  4 mos. later, terrible sore throat, especially at night, when swallowing.  no tenderness when palpated.  i live in mountains and the last "fill in"  doc told me to, " drink 7up and watch raw and awda (law and order).  he had a thick accent.  bottom line is, it's too complicated for docs.  they don't seem to be interested.  i have found diltuted hydrogen peroxide and h20 gargle to be very helpful.  it feels viral to me.

Hi I've  been suffering with similar symptoms too, sore throat with pain on the outside and aching neck and shoulders (left side). My throat sometimes feels like it has a lump and swollen glands.
My GP said my muscles have gone into spasm and prescribed diazepam, however I wasn't satisfied and have paid to go privately. I had an ultrasound on my neck and lo and behold they have found nodules in my thyroid (left side) I'm now waiting for a needle biopsy. I had a thyroid function test done in december and it was normal, apart from the throat and feeling excessive;y tired and slight heart flutters I don't know what's going on. Any suggestions?

Liz, sure am intrested in learning what the Doc had to say, I have been to my GP twice, he does a swab, and draws blood, and always caomes back negative, and thats how it is left. Went to a ENT, he says tonsilitis, gave me some amoxicillin, been on it for 6 days, no improvement. Yesterday went to a alternative medicine doctor, $281 dollars later, say`s it`s probaley related to my thuroid. No one will ever take the time and figure it out. Am really looking forward to what your Doc say`s. Good LUCK!

That's how mine was. It was sore, but not bad. I thought it was my sinuses dripping but then my neck got sore on the outside. It wasn't bothering me anymore by the time I went back to the doctor, so he thinks it was just a viral thing. Who knows anymore!

Hi,

I have something similar.  I have been on Armour thyroid for many years and in December my thyroid went "out of whack" with heart palpitations, etc. and feeling bad.  So far my meds have been reduced three times, and I am still feeling bad.  In regards to this post though, about a month ago the sides of my neck felt swollen and I thought/or think that it is from muscle spasms in my neck and shoulders which I get and also migraines.  Also I have drainage and after clearing my throat a bit, my voice sounds hoarse.  The sides of my neck aren't particularly sore, and neither is my throat - other than lower than my tonsils if feels raw and I am thinking from the draining.  But, I don't know if any of this is from my thyroid...so it sounds somewhat similar.  I have a doctor's appointment Monday - so we will see.

Liz
