Thyroid and Steroids

by dustybrown, Oct 07, 2009 07:13PM
I was talking with my husband about prednisone. He has taken it off and on throughout his life for various joint inflammation. He has never had trouble coming off of it whether he was tapered off or not. I have had trouble each and every time I have been on it (for asthma related issues mostly). I always thought I was having "withdrawal" symptoms- horribly aching joints, pain, anxiety, sweats, something that sounds a lot like opiate withdrawal if you ask me. But in my case I never was taking that much??? So I am puzzled by my reactions coming off of them. Do people with thyroid or adrenal problems have exaggerated responses to prednisone? I am still waiting for all of my test results from the endo, but I am very curious to know about this one if any one has any input. Thanks in advance.

I have hashimotos "hypothyroid" and I was on Prednisone for neck pain "twice" within a month.. Both times i took high dosages and was tappered over only a week and I had a HORRIBLE time coming off of it....  I don't know if it was from thyroid or not because i had never been on it prior to thyroid but i know that people that don't even have thyroid problems can have a hard time coming off of it.. so who knows...

I have read that corticosteroids (not anabolic) block T3 conversion.  I have seen several people I know that were on high doses of prednisone for a life threatening illness.  Weight gain, water retention, and moon face are the side effects.  Hmmm, sounds just like hypo?

20 some years ago, I got kenalog (corticosteroid) shots for hay fever.  I gained 30 stinking pounds in 60 days!  My Dr. said he had never heard of this.  Maybe I was just hungry?
My little sis gets kenalog shots all the time and she is 99 lbs.  It doesn't effect her weight at all.

So maybe there is a steroid/T3 connection?   Maybe some people are just more sensitive to the side effects?
