Thyroid peroxidase antibodies and Levothyroxin

I have hypothyroidism and take Levothyroxin.  I have a sibling with Hashimoto disease.  After much persuassion on my part, my doctor ordered thyroid peroxidase antibodies and it was negative.  Can taking the Levothyroxin cause it to be negative? I have all the symptoms and illnesses that go along with Hashimotos.  My doctor is not any help and I am switching to another soon.

I can't imagine the negative test being due to taking Levothyroxin.  With Hashi's you can have either or both Thyroid peroxidase, or Thyroglobulin antibodies. In order to confirm/rule out Hashi's, the doctor should have tested for both.  Those tests are TPO ab and TG ab.

Hashi's itself does not cause symptoms directly.  The symptoms result from the gradual destruction of your thyroid gland, and the associated gradually diminishing levels of thyroid hormone.   Of those Free T3 is the most important, because it largely regulates metabolism and many other body functions.  Scientific studies have shown that Free T3 levels correlated best with hypothyroidism, while Free T4 and TSH did not correlate at all.

Even if you don't have Hashi's that does not preclude having hypothyroidism.  Even though Hashi's is the most common cause for diagnosed hypothyroidism, there are other causes as well.

If you will please post your thyroid test results and reference ranges, along with symptoms, members will be better able to assess the adequacy of your testing and treatment.

Keep in mind that a good thyroid doctor will treat a hypo patient clinically by testing and adjusting Free T3 and Free T4 as necessary to relieve symptoms, without being constrained by resultant TSH levels.   Symptom relief should be all important, not just test results, and especially not just TSH results.
