Thyroid results

Hi, about a year ago i was diagnosed with having an overactive thyroid. I having been on treatement till about a month ago where i had blood tests to see what my levels were at.
The doctors told me my T4 levels is at a 8.9 which normal range is over 10 and below 20. Also my TSH is at a 0.05.
But am confused they have told me to carry on taking my carbimazole (20mg) at 1 tablet a day. I just thought the result suggest i have a underactive thyroid and shouldnt i be taking medication to bring it up?

Typically, hair loss is a hypo symptom, in your case a symptom of being overmedicated on carbimazole.  Your FT4 should really be quite a bit higher; midpoint of range (15 on your range) is more where it should be.

Your doctor didn't test FT3?

How long did you take 3 tablets?  How long ago did you start carbimazole?  Is this your first blood test since you began to take it?

Hi thank you for your reply. The reason I went was because at first I was taking 3 tablets of carbimazole a day and I began to feel good. In the last month I have noticed my hair is falling out. That's why I went for a blood test.  Am really Concerned about my hair and want to address this but not sure of the best way. Will taking the carbimazole improve my hair or make it worse?
Very confused

Your FT4 is 8.9 with a range of 10-20, so you are a bit under range.  Was FT3 tested, too?  If so, please post with reference range.

Are you having hypo symptoms?

Don't forget that the 8.9 result is a medicated result, while you are taking 20 mg carbimazole.  Your thyroid is not underactive; the carbimazole is suppressing T4 production.  If you went off it entirely, your FT4 would most likely go up again.  However, if you are feeling hypo, a decrease in carbimazole might have been in order.

With FT4 that low, one would expect TSH to be higher than it is.  It's still almost non-existent.  I suspect your doctor is keeping your meds the same until that goes up a bit.  That may not be the best thing, depending on how you feel.
