Wow --I am an anxious person to begin with and suffered from minor panic attacks when I was in my early 20's....Very interesting--and so glad I got the courage to post here! You have been great!
Forgot to mention...since RAi, no agoraphobia after 26 wasted years of people telling me ...'get over it'.
Another lesson learnt in life lol.
My thyroid caused 26 years of agoraphobia, mental anxiety and panic attacks.
If my levels go 'off balance ' at all, I get the anxiety back until they stabalise.
Thyroid disorders can cause so many anxiety/mental problems.
A panic attack can be caused by Thyroid? I was not aware of this. Thanks for the heads up!
If it was thyroid storm...your heart would feel like it was beating out of yr ears.
You would suffer complete confusion...not even knowing where you are or who you are.
You would have a heart rate of 160 plus and NOTHING will slow it down...not even swallowing beta blockers.
Thyroid storm doesnt 'settle' without hospitalisation and nitro glycerin (angina meds) put directly into the vein (IV).
I would say that maybe you had one hell of a panic attack caused by both hyper and hypo symptoms.
If thyroid storm isnt treated right away...a heart attack is iminent.
You would also feel as if an elephant is sitting on yr chest, and a knife being turned in between the shoulderblades on yr back.
The pain is so bad that you really truthfully feel you are dead along with utter mass confusion.
I am not dramatising when I say that this is what happens with thyroid storm.
But I do bleieve you should be on anti-thyroid meds and beta blockers which you can get from your local doc until you see yr endo.
All the best and let us know how you go.
I accidentally wrote I am hypo but I am actually hyper--with graves and hashis antibodies. My last labs were 799 for TSI with <150 normal and 175 <5 for Microsomal. My TSH was .010 with .4-5.5 range. Because my brain seems to constantly malfunction I meant to write I have more hypo symptoms but am hyper according to lab work. This makes it difficult to articulate to my endo why I am concerned. He looks at labs and has nurse call me . I don't know that my new one even looked at my old labs with HAshis in there, since I told the nurse on the phone and she seemed surprised. When I asked them to restest so they had their own results, my request was ignored.
When I had a thyroid storm, I did not even know I was having one.
Went in for an up take on thyroid, while waiting in the waiting area, an Endo calls me into the hall way and tells me he has to admit me. I was in a thyroid storm. I was very cluelss on what was going on with my body. My HR was 140 sitting down, my kidneys were malfunctioning, weight was down to 88lbs from 124lbs, my eyes protruded, had insomnia, my body thought i was a diabetic, so had to get insulin shots, everything just went hay wire. I ended up having two thyriod storms before surgery was done. I did the RAI, but that did not work for me.
I can't say if you will know the warning signs, I did not, not even after the first one. The second was the same, went in for an appt. with Endo after the RAI, to my surprise they tell me the same thing, "have to admitt you in hospital now". Had surgery done, no more storms...
That isn't a thyroid storm. A thyroid storm is an emergency situation and requires medical intervention.
What you probably had was a whole mess of symptoms from being hypo and having high antibodies. The thyroid regulates body temp so that was probably the start of that attack. It is very difficult for some of us to be out in the heat doing anything physical, let alone just sitting. :)
I always use an ice pack behind my neck and in front to cool myself down when that starts happening to me. I also try to drink a powerade Before I go out in the heat.
Eat something salty and drink powerade next time before you go out in the heat, and see if that helps.
What were your most recent lab results? ARe you still in the hypo range?
