Thyroid

Dr Lupo,
I was diagnosed with nogules on my thyroid  a few months ago and was told nothing serious that they were hot and not likely to be cancerious after a radioactive scan. Then about 6 wks ago started with very bad headaches, and left jaw pain kind of like TMJ, was sent for CT of sinus they dont see anything then a week ago woke up in pain with swollen Pirotid gland in my neck and jaw. I was given antiobiotics and a shot of steriods and was told it's just swollen. Do you think this has anything to do with my thyroid??

What are the latest thyroid tests that were done?  Can you post the results, along with the reference ranges from your lab report, as these vary from lab to lab......

Thyroid nodules are very common; I have several, myself,  and nothing so drastic as HIV, which is totally unrelated; though you might very well have an autoimmune thyroid disease (so do I), which might make you miserable, but is very unlikely to kill you  ... I doubt seriously that the thyroid tests had anything to do with the suspicious mamo, but reproductive and thyroid hormones are both endocrine so one never knows. .

How about posting whatever thyroid lab tests you've had done, calm down and take it one step at a time... we'll try to work through it with you.......

Even though your thyroid tests have come back "normal", they might not be normal for you; and it depends on what tests are being done........ if your doctor is only doing TSH, which is a pituitary hormone, he's doing you a disservice and will keep you ill.

As I said "TSH is a pituitary hormone"....... it can vary throughout the day for a variety of reasons; therefore should never be used as the sole test for diagnosing/treating thyroid issues......... You need to have Free T3 (FT3) and Free T4 (FT4), which are the actual thyroid hormones available for use.......

Please post your latest thyroid hormone test results, along with the reference ranges from your lab report.  If your doctor did not give you a copy of the report, you should request it; he's obligated by law to provide you with a copy.......

Thank you so much for responding. I am going crazy reading all these different posts thinking the worst like HIV or something crazy. I have had my thyroid blood tests done for many yrs and results always come back "NORMAL". Never much energy and weight gain by just looking at food, hair breakage, and now almost no period just cramps n a light half day period. My cardiologist was the one who actually noticed a lump or goiter a few months ago. Was having bad palpations for weeks that are now normal. He sent me for the ultrasound and they found 3 or 4 nogules some on each side. He refered me back to my GP who ordered the radioactive pill test and he said not to worry, I treat thyroid and you don't need to do a thing. Within a week of that a regular mamo came back suspicous so I went thru several more diagnostic US and follow ups w a Br surgeon. Results are we will watch, its the same spot as 2 yrs ago and hasnt changed. Needless to say my thyroid got put on the back burner. I just seem to think somehow my headaches and now gland swollen are related to thyroid?? My jaws always tingle now for a week and jaw pain in left for weeks now. Thought TMJ at one point. Have you heard of any side effects from the radioactive pill you take with the test??
The thing that scares me also is I had a benign tumor in my L Peritod gland 22 yrs ago removed and this pain and sensation is just a scary flash back.

Thank you soo much!!

I had a goiter that I could not see, my gyn noticed it. I had every test, they were all
negative. Then I had an ultrascan of my thyroid and had the surgery to cut out the goiter.
Then when they sent the tissue they found cancer. I also had TMJ and migranes for twenty years. I am 50yrs No history of thyroid problems in the family. So I would say the ultrascan is the best test which can be expensive $500-1500.
I put it off for a year an the goiter grew bigger. I ended up having my whole thyroid cut out.
