A TSH of 5.09 is not really high, and not very conclusive of anything except that you need to get some additional tests done. Specifically, I suggest that you should test for Free T3 and Free T4 each time you go in for tests. I agree with Bucsfan about the TPO ab and TG ab tests. Further, I suggest tests for Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin.
When you have more test results, please post, along with their reference ranges, and members will be glad to help interpret and advise further.
no expert but have your thyroid antibodies checked with yr blood work
check your T4 and T3 levels. They are more important than tsh
check your TPO ab and TG ab
you might have Hashimoto's thyroiditis .
With hashimotos you can swing back and forth from hypo to hyper.
Good luck
Is 5.09 really high? I don't understand it all. One more symptom that I have is my heart will race & I get shaky hands sometimes. Are they symptoms? What other tests can Dr. do besides blood panel?
I'm trying to gain weight, weigh 105 & 5'7". Only symptoms are joint muscle pain, memory loss, tingling in both hands & get cold easy. I do have 2 pinched nerves in my neck though. I eat very healthy & am pretty active. Wasn't using iodizes salt for a long time, but I am now.
It is difficult to answer that question with any assurance. TSH is a pituitary hormone that is affected by so many things that it is not very useful, even though doctors like to think it accurately reflects levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4. In reality TSH cannot be shown to correlate well with either Free T3 or Free T4, much less correlate well with symptoms, which should be the number one concern, not just blood test results.
With that said, a TSH at that level may be an indication that you at least need further testing. Also, are you having any symptoms? If so, please tell us about them.
