Thyroidectomy and Graves Disease

My 42 yr. old son was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had his thyroid completely removed.  Some short time later he was diagnosed with and is being treated for Graves Disease. Since, as I understand it, Graves Disease develops as a result of hyperthyroidism, how does someone who is hypothyroid develop the disease?
Thank you.

I have Graves, had RAI & TT (thyca) and doing great nearly 2 years later.
What are your levels ?
If you are gaining weight then your levels mustnt be stabilised.
Post your FT3/FT4 and TSH here.

As for the Graves antibodies...mine went into remission after RAI June 2008.

And what meds are you on for hypothyroidism?
You should only be on a T4 med or natural thyroid hormone.

Grave's disease is a form of hypERthyroidism from what my doctors told me. I went for a year without any kind of diagnosis, as thyroid testing is not a common test done. I had lost close to 60 pounds in about 2 months. Finally they did the test and it came out as Graves disease. Then came the frustrating part... the doctors put me on the meds to try to fix it... that didn't work. Then came the radiation.. didn't work. So we went back to the pills and before I knew it, I was on 27 different pills a day (thyroid, blood pressure, heart rate)! It was crazy.. nothing helped!! Finally after hassling the doctors for 3 years, not sleeping for weeks straight, and getting down to 97 pounds(btw i'm almost 6 foot tall), they decided to do the surgery! Everything was fine, but now Im on alot of medicine to combat the hypothyroid disease! Is there any foods or anything that can help with this? Im gaining weight like crazy and tired all the time!! The medicine doesn't seem to be doing anything and Im going crazy dealing with it all!!! HELP!!!!

Either he was Graves' before surgery or he has antibodies that is interrupted as being Graves'.
His thyroid levels should have related Graves', which are actually the prevailing diagnose, antibodies just confirm.
