Total Thyroid Removal

1st and foremost, I want to thank all of you who take the time to post here.  It has been very helpful for me.
I just had my thyroid removed on Monday and I was sent home from the hospital today, Wednesday.  They kept me an extra day because my calcium levels were/are low (6.5)
I was sent home with calcium supplements 1000mg  4times a day and calcitrol .5 2 times a day.
I still am getting slight tingling in my hands and in my feet when i cross my legs and my eye has a slight twitch.
Is this normal?
I think my anxiety is getting the better of me.

thanks!

Thanks!
it is really helpful to have this forum here.
I talked to my doctor today, and he said not to be concerned about the tingling unless it progresses to cramping.  Just to keep taking the calcium.
That makes me feel a little better, but I've felt so weak and shaky that every sensation freaks me out.
I feel light headed when I get up, and am obsessed over the constant tingling and weakness that I feel.
I know it's only been 3 days, but I can't help but be a little scared.  I guess I wasn't expecting this post surgery.

thanks for listening!

Yes, regarding the full feeling, its very normal, as long as you can breathe and swallow!  Its just scar tissue forming and you are still healing!

I too had / have calcium issues.  Remember, you just had surgery.  You are taking a LOT of calcium and rocaltrol.  I can understand that you need it right now, but please request regular blood work to test your calcium and PTH.  As your levels start to creep up, you need to reduce your Ca and Vit D supplements very slowly, very very slowly.  (btw, rocaltrol is vit d).  Ask fro blood work twice a week for now so that your calcium is closely monitored.

Remember, temporary calcium issues are very common, but permanent are very rare, so I'm sure this is a short term issue.

Tingling is definitely a sign of low calcium, but it also happens as your parathyroids kick back in and begin to work.

If you have any other questions, please ask.  :)

Now go llie down and rest!

I had a full feeling in my neck as well.  That's the swelling that will inevitably happen after any surgery.  It took about two weeks for me for that to resolve.

As for the calcium issues, I know there's at least one member here who's gone through some calcium problems who can hopefully answer this for you.  I never had any problems with it.

Take care!
