Total Thyroidectomy

Hi Everyone I had a total thyroidectomy two weeks ago and my scar is still a little bumpy and sore and also my throat is sore .. I am a little concerned as I havn't been started on any thyroid hormone replacement drugs yet all they gave me was a calcium which I have to take 3000 mg a day, How long can I go without this hormone? & why do I need so much calcium and brrrr why do I feel the cold now lol, I was hyper thyroidism before the operation and the ooperation took a lot longer as the surgeon said it was a lot larger and extremly inflamed,

Any help or insight would be most appreciated

Why did you have it removed?  I had thyroid cancer and did not get any synthroid until 7 weeks after the final surgery because I needed RAI and they want you really hypo for that.  My TSH rose to 186...I was VERY hypo.  So the answer is, don't panic, you can actually go at least 7 weeks!  I got my synthroid the day after the dose of RAI.

You are definately cold because you're not producing enough of the thyroid hormone.   Did you Dr tell you why he/she didn't give you any meds?  If you were really hyper before it's possible that your Dr felt there was still enough thyroid hormone left in your body but that's not always the case.  If you're taking that much calcium your parathyroids were probably bruised or removed during the surgery.   They impact your body's abililty to absorb calcium which is critical hence the large levels of calcium you're being asked to take.  I would talk to your Dr and get as much information as you can.

I would be giving the Endo a call and asking for thyroid replacement.,
You are cold as your thyroid is gone therefore you arent producing thyroid hormone.
Coldness is usually a sign of HYPO and you do need to get some replacement into you.
