Very Dry Mouth

by Dawn1214, Nov 26, 2008 02:36PM
Hello everyone,

I am off my synthroid awaiting a Thyroid uptake and scan. A few days ago I started to struggle with a very very dry mouth. Is this a symptom of Hypothyroid? If so can anyone tell me what they do for this?  That along with the constipation is driving me crazy. Any advice for the constipation would be helpful too.

Thanks
Dawn

Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash are very good for dry mouth. Also, chewing sugarless gum and sucking on sour candy.  I don't think it's a hypo symptom but I could be wrong.  Mine is the result of the radioactive iodine even though my endo says it's not.

As for the constipation, welcome to the hypo party!  That IS a result of being hypo. Just drink lots of water, eat lots of fiber and if you have to....glycerin suppositories are the only thing that worked for me.  Hey, when you gotta go and your body is saying NO then you do what you gotta do!

Thanks for the reply.

You are right about doing what you gotta do. It really stinks. I eat a bowl of cereal with fiber every night hoping it will help but it's not doing the trick. I tried stool softeners. They help a bit, but I don't know if I should take them daily. I seem to recall taking them everyday when I was pregnant.

As for the dry mouth it just came on suddenly and I can't figure it out. I was hoping it was a hypo symptom because I can't think of what else it could be. I have been chewing gum constantly and sucking on candy but it is with me all the time.

Can't wait for my scan date so I can get back on the meds and feel normal again )if that's possible)
Thanks again

I am on Thyroxin (.75mcg) and have had dry mouth since RAI too.
It comes and goes and havent found a solution to it yet.
The only thing that eases it is drinking plenty of water....then I feel like a damn Goldfish lol
