Vision

by dhh204, Jan 30, 2008 07:37PM
I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and am presently taking synthroid.  I had cataract surgery and the Lasik surgery 1 year to clear up the cloudiness.   I began having the flashing lights and white spots that have subsided, but now I have a cloudiness that is on both eyes.  It is as if I am looking out a window that is frosted..  I am in my early fifities and I do not know what is causing this problem.  It is progressivley getting worse.  I am going to an optometrist that is unfamilar with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.  I can see very well at a distance and only need reading glasses.  The problem is the cloudiness of my vision.  I am afraid it will get so bad I will lose my vision.  What is the cause and what can I do?.   Do you think it has anything to do with the Hashimoto's Thyroiditis?

You should really try to get to an opthamologist, not an optometrist.  I hadn't been to an opthamologist in years and they do so many more tests on your eyes than an optometrist.
Have you contacted the doctor who did the Lasik surgery?

Hey there,

I don't want to scare you, but you should have an eye appointment and get checked for macular degeneration.  Cataract surgery can speed up the process--I did research when my friend's cataract surgery significantly worsened his mac. degen.  There are various treatments.  My grandmother had this problem too.

You can also ask your doctor because you have an autoimmune condition--maybe the stress of the surgery has activated more antibodies that pertain to the eyes.

Hope you get it figured out...take care.

Maybe you should see another eye doctor--a lot of eye doctors don't want to admit the relationship between cataract surgery and macular degeneration.

Afterthought,

Or, it could be hormonal.  When I was pregnant, my eyesight became blurrier.
After delivery, it went back to my old prescription.  You are at an age where hormone imbalance could be likely.
