Is there a problem absorbing Vitamin D .. if the body has a low level of Vitamin D ? .. like the 50,000 dose ?

I was deficient in Vitamin D after RAI and took 1000mg a day for 4 weeks.
I had no problems absorbing it.
50,000 seems a lot.
Why that much?

Vit D is absorbed through the instetinal wall, so unless you have malabsorption syndrome there should be no problems. I presume your doc is putting you on this dose for a few weeks, then dropping you down? How are your calcium levels? If they are low I would presume that's why you are on the Vit D.

I'm on 5400 IUs a day of Vitamin D but no problems with calcium or magnesium. My DO said that many people have vitamin D deficiencies. I'll probably get my levels rechecked in a few weeks to see what they are at now. I started taking the supplements in November.

I found Magnesium helped with the aches and pains and with the Vitimin D , I took a combined Calcium/Vitamin D tablet. As they say that Vitamin D helps the Calcium to absorb.
This was all ok'd by my Doctor as I have the vitamin deficiencies checked prior to taking anything.
I was also told not to take any vitamins until at least 4 hours after the thyroxin.

Actually Low Vitamin D might suggest High calcium levels...not low calcium levels.  see website   http://www.parathyroid.com/low-vitamin-d.htm
You might want to check your parathyroid hormone levels

My Vit.D went down to 8.5 LOW! I have high serum calcium and parathyroidism. But the docs think it's secondary and they don't know what's causing it. I'm on D supplements now but as my D goes up, so does my serum calcium and parathyroid. I'm in a catch22.
