Waiting for results... scared... any encouragement?

Hi. I had an u/s and a biopsy on my thyroid on Tues and I am waiting for my results. As the days pass, I am starting to get nervous as I do have a lot of different kinds of cancer in my family and I'd love any words of encouragement. I do know that the nodule was over 4 cm and it was solid- both I've heard are not good. If it is benign, what does this mean? Would I still need to get it removed? What else could it be besides cancer? Is it still surgery? I am so confused? It seems so big and hard to believe that I could live with it like this. I just dont understand what else it could be. I would love any words of wisdom as I really know very little about the thyroid and the more I read the more confused I get. I think I will get the results either tomorrow or Monday, but my bloodwork (which was normal took 2 weeks) so I am not hopeful that this will be quick either! Thanks in advance!!

Thanks again. In looking at my lab work, the only relevant blood work that I see is TSH and it says that my value is 2.53 with a normal being .45-4.5. They didnt run any of the other tests that you wrote about. Should I ask the surgeon on Tues to run these tests? My reg doc didnt run then with my orig blood work. The only blood work that came back irreg was the EOS (I guess for allergies) and the carbon dioxide. I will def talk to the surgeon about all of the possible scenarios. My doc was very unhelpful. You guys have been wonderful. I will keep you posted. Thanks so much.

Don't ever feel stupid for asking questions --- that's how we learn things and that's why we come to this forum - either to GET or GIVE information and/or support....We've all been scared and unsure........

You said your blood work was "normal" - can you post your thyroid tests, along with the results and the lab's reference ranges?  That would help us all greatly in answering your questions.  Thyroid tests that might have been run include, but are not limited to, TSH, Free T4 (FT4), Free T3 (FT3), TPOab (thyroid peroxidase antibodies), TGab (thyroglobulin antibodies).

There are some foods (raw broccoli, cabbage, and some others) that inhibit the absorption of thyroid meds.  It's also good to take a good multi if you have thyroid issues because there are some vitamins/minerals that might be able to help you feel better.

Again, if you can post your thyroid labs, along with the lab's reference ranges, that would be helpful.

Thank you all again. You are so supportive! You said eat good food that doesnt bother your thyroid... what does that mean? I am so new to this all. My blood work came came completely normal, except for carbon dioxide which was low (which I assuming is completely normal). I think I am neither hyper or hypo. What does the multi-vit for my adrenal system mean and where can I research all of this? I am sorry to ask so many questions. I feel really stupid that I dont know anything. I actually dont take any vit, but will def start taking them. Thanks again in advance. I appreciate any and every bit of advice!!

Please don't worry!! Do meditation, prayers, EAT GOOD FOOD THAT WON'T BOTHER THE TYROID.

GET SUNSHINE, EXERCISE.

what is your history? Hypothyroidism or Hyperthyroidism...

Take a good Multi-vitamins for your Adrenal system. I don't have the money now but next week I am buying it.

I have already selected the brand and all.

Are your Hyper or Hypo?

Just wanted to update you all. Thank you so much for your responses. You were so kind and so helpful. It is benign. Yeah!! I am seeing a surgeon on Tues to discuss next steps. My dr said I could "ignore" however, I am hoarse from it and it is uncomfortable, so I cannot imagine living with it. But... I am ecstatic that it is not cancerous. Thank you so much for your support!!

Mine was 2cm and 100% benign solid overgrowth of thyroid tissue that FNA'd atypical!   So, yes, it can be 4cm's but as others have mentioned 4cm's can cause other issues by size alone, yet be benign.

Keep us posted!

The waiting is the hardest part.  I had to wait 9 weeks from FNA to my surgery.

Yes - keep calm - this will all be fine.. Many of us have been in your shoes.

4cm is large and persoanlly I think too large even if it is just benign. This can make things very uncomfortable for you later so have faith in what you hear.

I know this is a really scary time.  It is for many people that face this same thing. That's why communities are built like this.

I don't think anything but benign or cancer can come out of this. I don't know of anything else it could be.

Don't be confused - post all you want here. Many will come forward.

Like the previous posters said, it is highly likely that your nodule is benign.  The doctor may still want it removed due to size, as it can press on your vocal cords.  Are you experiencing hoarseness?  My biopsy came back as cancer and I had a total thyroidectomy 3 years ago.  I had 5 growths, the largest was 4.8 cm.  Try to relax until you know more of your results.  good luck.

Ditto to what Totie wrote, only about a 5-15% chance of cancer, however IF it is cancer, it is almost 100% curable depending upon the type of cancer, so the odds are with you...

Stop, take a long deep breathe. It will be okay. I have been in your shoes, and everything came out okay. Yours will be the same (just said a prayer for you)...

Not going to be mean here, but IF it is cancer, I have read that "thyroid cancer" is easily treated, unlike other cancers.

Trying focusing on something else IF you can. It will be okay. Enjoy the day.

Good luck and God bless
