Weight gain and low TSH???

by Lightsmsb, Oct 11, 2007 10:52PM
Hello all:
Wow, its been a long time since I have been back here due to how busy I have been with my unit in the Navy.  We are getting ready to go to the field in Dec for 3 weeks.  I hope all are doing well!!!!

I am curious about weight gain with a low TSH.  I am about 10 months post TT due to ThyCa.  I had my RAI (low dose 33mci) in March.  My last appt in July had the following results:

TSH: 0.16
T-3 Total: 105   (60-181 Range)
T-3 Uptake: 33  (22-35 Range)
T-4 Free: 1.7     (0.8-1.8 Range)
T-4 (Thyroxine) Total: 10.4    (4.5-12.5 Range)
Free T-4 Index(T-7):  3.4   (1.4-3.8 Range)

I have slowly been creeping the weight on and have been exercising a lot due to being in the Navy.  I hear a  lot of hyperthyroid patients dont even exercise and lose weight.  Any help with this would be appreciated.  I asked my endo about this at that appt and told me I needed to get out an exercise but told him the same thing I just told you.  I was last month doing a lot extra exercises due to the yearly Chief training that I was part of getting our new advanced chiefs ready for their pinning in Sept.

Appreciate your time and again, I hope all are doing well!

Cheers,
Scott

Hey, good to hear from you again.  Yeah, it's been crazy for a lot of us.

I wish I could give you some good answers but I know I've been putting on the weight too since the TT and RAI and my TSH is .9.  I wish there were good answers.  I'm wondering if it makes a difference being "naturally" hyperthyroid versus those of us who go there through surgery and RAI.

Have you been having any joint pains too?

I had major weight loss before diagnosis...(was to thin) but once treatment for Hyperthyroid/Graves started I haver never been slim since.
My weight is well above what I am happy with. I eat a healthy diet, not too mauch that puts on weight etc.
I know its part of this disease & thyroid levels and I have to put up with it...but I dont have to like it & I dont.

Some days I feel not only overweight but bloated & look it...thats the worse.

My doc tells me being slim was a False/Forced state to be in due to thyroid disorder....now I am what I naturally should be going by my lifestyle.

Sorry doc...you are wrong, I never had weight problems till had thyroid problems.

I had RAI due to uncontrollable weight loss from  Hyper/Graves'.  After treatment I gained half back from my starting weight before Graves'. I have to watch my eating to keep the other half down, although its the correct weight for my height.  Like patient-x, it is not my desired weight because I still want to be skinny.

TSH does not influence weight.  I personally think its, way back,  in our genes. Don't really know the answer - some hyper's will lose while others will gain and likewise with hypo's. If we knew the answer, we'd all be thin.

However, I think a lot of us have the wrong expatiation for our weight.

Hi there,
Wow, Its great to find a fellow Thyca patient on here as well. I had my TT 4 months ago..

I have the same trouble as you my TSH is 2.7 (0.4- 4.0) and  FT4 is 15.3 (9-19)  I have been slowly gaining weight. I try to keep up the exercise  but it doesn't seem to help.. Your Tsh is 0.16 seems very good.

I have been wanting to increase my 125mg  dosage so to keep my Tsh down, but my doctor said that I would have increased heart risk..

I need to perhaps see another doctor??
