Weight gain with hyperthyroidism

by evabenay, Oct 17, 2008 03:03PM
I was diagnosed in march with hyperthyroidism after going to my yearly exam and complaining that I'd gained 15 lbs, since march that has gone up to 20. They suspected I might have hypothyroidism, but I have hyper. I'm not sure of my lab results, but I know that tsh was <0.01. I'm terrified of treatment because I'm afraid to gain any more weight. I'm on the verge of developing an eating disorder because of this. I have made myself vomit twice after seeing my weight go up throughout the day, and on some days I try very hard, but usually fail to reduce food intake. My food intake isn't that much more than it used to be either. I just don't understand. I can't gain any more weight, I don't think I could handle that mentally and am worried that it would throw me into a full blown eating disorder.

In 2005 I was diagnosed hyperthyroidism.  I was shocked to say the least, as I too had gain a lot of weight in a short period of time.  I could not stop eating, but I did not have energy to hardly move.  Heart palps, shortness of breath and dizziness where terrible.  I was given tapazole to help the hyperthyroidism.  I was able to lose weight once I got the correct dose.  I did have to work to lose the weight (50 pounds), but was very nice to have my energy back to be able to workout and make healthy meals.  I also stopped having the urge to eat and eat.  I was able to feel that full feeling.

All of my thyroid issues confuse the heck out of me. I alway thought hyperthyroid diagnosis meant that you would be very thin. GO figure!

I just wanted to share my story with you and suggest that you talk to you doctor about how you feel and try treatment.
I wish you the best!
Take care,
Mary

Please dont get yourself started on an eating disorder, It wont help !
Trust me I have been there.
I was diagnosed with hyper in 2003 and lost 30 lbs pretty quick, for about 8 months I was able to eat anything and didnt gain a pound, I would actually continue to lose weight.
They put me on 2 meds please forgive me for spelling but : methamatabazol and something else.
About 3 months after taking that I started gaining weight, so I stopped taking it and have gained 110 lbs since then.
I gain about 10 lbs per month on avreage. I have made myself throw up every meal for a week and have still gained, I trained for a marathon and cut back all food but fruit and veggies and still gained.
I cant get any help from Dr.'s, they all think I sit around and eat all day, saying just excercise and eat right and keep up with it.
I have been going through this for about 3 years now and still gaining.
I dont know what else to do.
On top of that I had my gallbladder removed in 03 and had diarhea (diarrhea) for almost 2 years after and STILL gained weight.
I have gained approx. 110 lbs. and I cant find a Dr. to listen to me.
I'm worried about diabeties and other things, and they dont seem to have any concerns about it.
I have went to 3 diffrent Dr.'s and everytime they send me to lab for thyroid reading they always show diffrent results, One day I am hypo, next week it shows I'm hyper.
Help !!!!
